You could always have a plane with the texture alpha'd and then make a lod for the distance which is just a bunch of long poly squares with the texture over it no alpha. Luckily that makes zero sense so I'll post a pic soon

I never really understood the easy to ride thing for the 450, if your a beginner-intermediate you shouldn't be riding a 450 in the first place Shhh get outta here with your logic!!! It's just fake shadows and highlights for your texture map. You just place it over the top with a blend (Depends on the AO Map but it might be Overlay with maybe 25% opacity)
