Change... is good- READ

Post by JB323 »

so before all my motocross and press stuff etc i came from gaming, big time. Beta testing, clan matches, CAL, Halflife 1/2 mods etc, servers/forums moderators and communities inside of mods.. similar to what XFIRE is becoming. Below will be a rant with things that need to be changed and added for the progression of mxsim, from what ive seen in my past to other games.

Jlv i know your swampped, and overwhelmed with your life and work your doing, i fully understand what effort n time goes into these, i reallly feel you need to open up to your community. Even tho its your game, it can be helped with the group here. There is a great group of people here from modelers, skinners, tracks and more, Ive noticed it over the past 4 months. Now since your not a big corporate owned game and more of a third party mod in a sense i feel you need to utilize that where you can use support unlike full games with outlines and guidelines.

For example the track comp was made with excellent tracks, and quality which in turn you asked for permission to own/use these if i remember. Now im almost 90% if you asked that same concept for some of the better tracks the creators they would allow you and more then likely be stoked if you could use their work in your game as long as maybe you gave some credit somewhere and THAT they could say hey i got featured in mx sim for their own purposes (portfolio or whatever)

The new bike models and rider models im sure that if you talk with them seriously they wouldn't mind releasing it to you..i mean were all using them now, people wouldn't help progress this game and make all of these things if we didn't want them to be used. When you get free time you need to look into these simple effortless updates that could drastically change and update mxsim, 1/3 of the players have NO IDEA of the forums/servers/models/tracks and infact don't know how to change servers. People need things to be very simple and easy for them, have presets or something just for now. Now the servers, we have way to many servers that do nothing. I feel you need to bump the 00 server to at least 15 plus maybe 20. JUST TO HAVE OPEN. Im not sure if their dedicated or not but ive tested with others already and they hold up fine. People do not want to wait around trying to get it... hell the XFIRE community can already fill the stock server instantly at any time... which means NO ONE ELSE can play, or they wait to join the server and the creates frustration then they leave and do not play. your loosing customers which equals loosing money in a sense. and the stock tracks can handle at least 20 people, it might be a little hectic but people adapt, Just like how we all adapted in the track comp tracks. Its been a month or two almost these TRACKS need to be put in rotation on the stock server maybe not all of them but throw in one of two of the slowly. You have all the work cut out for you almost, you just got to do these little changes for BIG CHANGE. I can go on, but ill save it for next month. :)

RECAP- need to be done ASAP
Maxplayers increase on stock server- 15-20
Rotate in a few track comp maps in 00 server list, slowly work them in for people who cant ride em yet.
Talk to creators about using work/ work a deal/ same concept as track comp in a way. im sure they'll let you, you help them they help you.
Feature in AUTOTEXT in servers about updates/info. Assume people are idiots and cant do anything for themselves
continue working hard JLV :) hell id buy the game again
Tracks you can use no prob but on models/skins you might need to add a discloser just saying "this game has no affiliation with ktm, honda, suzkik, thor, fly, etc and has no means to blahblahblah" just to cover yourself if you choose to go that route, someone else could elaborate on this in that field.

I support mxsim a lot and it has potential to go far, but now i feel you need to take in the knowledge of the more experienced people around you for help and what they know from their history.. im sure there are a few others here that have a similar history like mine where they come from big gaming backgrounds and learn from game and mods and what each community brought and added. These are all really simple quick fixes that need to be done to keep this game alive, and honestly the main servers need it not the 3rd party servers because we do it every night lol.

thanks for reading everyone,
-James

The bandwidth requirements go up exponentially with more players. So 20 players is something I'd only do for special occasions. Opening another 10 player server would be reasonable.

As for new models, once the shaders are done the models will need to be redone. I'm planning on doing that in a completely open way. I'll license everything under the Creative Commons Attribution license and post updates often to get feedback. Anyone who doesn't mind those conditions will be free to contribute. All I will ask is that contributors prove it is their own work.

get rid on 19804 and 4 people to 19800. Get ride of 2 poeple form the 19804 server add that to 19800. So 19800 can have 17 people....

I agree with James completely and as far as the servers go could we at least give 15 or more players in a server a chance? Opening another server just separates the community...whats the fun in that? MXsim is an awesome game JLV and i hope you give some of these suggestions a try. I appreciate all of the effort you put into this game, thank you.

Even if it will lag a few peoples computers you need to add at least 5 more slots to the stock server, with the game growing daily its becoming a necessity and not a want.

Really good post man!

JLV: Models sound like an awesome Idea

People that want more people in servers: Did you not read JLV's comment? Every extra person makes the needed bandwidth exponentially bigger. So to go from 10-11 isnt a small jump... It might be double. Then to go from 11-12 double again, 12-13 another double.

Most internet speeds just couldnt handle it. You would need to live in USA and be close to an exchange to get reasonably frame rates.

In bytes per second, here's an approximation of how much bandwidth you need for a given number of players:

1 3808
2 10624
3 20448
4 33280
5 49120
6 67968
7 89824
8 114688
9 142560
10 173440
11 207328
12 244224
13 284128
14 327040
15 372960
16 421888
17 473824
18 528768
19 586720
20 647680
21 711648
22 778624
23 848608
24 921600
25 997600
26 1076608
27 1158624
28 1243648
29 1331680
30 1422720
31 1516768
32 1613824
33 1713888
34 1816960
35 1923040
36 2032128
37 2144224
38 2259328
39 2377440
40 2498560

Two 10 player servers use less than one 15 player server.

My server is on a 10 megabits/sec connection (about 1,250,000 bytes/sec) with a 1000 GB (gigabytes) per month limit. That means the peak number of players I could handle is 28 players if it was just one server. But the per month limit means I have to average less than 361,689 bytes/sec, which would be 14 players on one server. Since the servers aren't full 24/7 I have more slots open than I could handle if they were full constantly, sort of like an oversold web host.
