Hi All,
New to the forum and MX Simulator in general.. I'm Darin Gangi from the internet show Inside Sim Racing. We're covering MX Simulator on our next show and was hoping I could get some tips on control and what controllers works best.. I have a Fanatec PC Twin Shock controller and a few Thrustmaster Ferrari Gamepads.
Main question is whats the best way to setup the controls and how do I get the rider to kick and turn ? Arcade physics are easy to ride and I can go for a little bit in sim mode.
What view do most ride from ??
Would love to do some multiplayer racing with some of you..
Hope to hear from someone soon.. This sim kicks ass .. Im impressed

A steering wheel probably isnt the best controller to be using for an MX game. I use a PS2 controller, with the following setup:
-----------------------------------------
Right analogue stick: Up - Throttle
Down - Front and rear brake
Left analogue stick: Up - Lean forward
Down - Lean back
Left - Turn left
Right - Turn right
R1: Dab
L1: Clutch
L2: Gear down
R2: Gear up
Triangle: Reverse
-----------------------------------------
Have a look at some of the threads on bike setup, that may help you stay upright better.

I would use whatever game pad is most comfortable for you... (but a steering wheel would not work very well)
For me, that's a Xbox 360 controller. Mapped like this...
Left Analog Stick - lean forward, lean backward, lean left, lean right
Right Analog Stick - Up shift, downshift
Left Trigger - Front brake
Right Trigger - Throttle
Left Shoulder Button - clutch
Right Shoulder Button - rear brake
A Button - sit down (hold button to stay sitting, release to stand)
I have to ride in third person, first person is so disorienting because you cant feel what the bike is doing underneath you. At least with third person you can see the bike moving beneath you.
JLV should be able to hook you up with some solid suspension/stability settings, i would give you mine, but they are kinda crazy...

Did you guys think I'd be using a wheel cause I mentioned Fanatec ? It's actually a gamepad
http://www.fanatec.de/html/index.php?id=260&lang=en
It's pretty cool but the pivot is a little clunky and the controller is big.. Im going to try out a Thrustmaster F60 wireless pad.. It's similar to a PS3 with some extra functions..
Thanks for the tips on the mapping.. I'll try it now.. Would love to hook up with some of you too and do some multiplayer races.

Do you have Xfire? A good chunk of us hang out on xfire in a voice enabled chatroom. My Xfire name is ShackAttack12 if you would like to add me. Organizing racing is much easier that way.

I have some suggestions.
Definitely set it up so that at bare minimum you have analog:
Steering
Throttle
Front Brake
Clutch
If you are in Sim mode, set stabilty to 30-40. Set the brakes to be antilock and stop nosewheelies. Turn auto dab on. Ride in first person. Go to advanced settings and set your rider mass distribution to 0.4-0.45 (it brings your center of mass back). Front braking torque to something like 350-400. Don't worry about suspension settings, the default ones are decent. Download all of the new skins/models.
I use the ps3 controller, but xbox 360 works just as well. This is my control setup:
Throttle: Right stick up
Rear brake: Right stick down
Front brake: Right trigger (R2 - this is analog on ps3 controller with motioninjoy drivers)
Clutch: Left trigger (L2 - analog)
Lean left/right: Left stick left/right
Lean forward/back: Left stick up/down
Shift up: right bumper button (R1)
Shift down: left bumper (L1)
Those are the important ones. If you need to adjust your dead zone on any of the analog controls (specifically lean left/right is common) then you will need to edit your config file. The directions for doing so are around here on the forums, just search for it.

1 spot for a spectator is 1 spot where someone cant race

About time SRT gave MX Sim some love. I was hounding you guys about it a year ago.
If you want to get some good footage do what Mxer suggested and come watch the race, or participate, I'd sit out and just watch for that.
If you can't make the supercross race just post in the forums when you want to run, JLV always has two servers going that we could all rush to get in and race with ya.

I definitely don't want to take someones spot on the grid. maybe I can get good enough to run in a supercross race someday..
I got the Thrustmaster 7 axis controller going and I don't think MX liked it.. Switched to 4 axis and it's working good now.. Just need to get used to the controls and how to keep it stable..
Some great tips so far, thanks !

Best tip to ever get is that you don't make up your time in striaghts or on jumps. Figure out how to turn and your golden. The best way to do that is to have a comfortable speed and hit the berm about midel to top of the turn and don't make a continuous turn, lean it just enough then pick yourself back up half way through the turn and gas.

I'm using Joystick T16000M (leaning, rolling) and buton for gearing & clutch. And use pedals (from my wheel) for accelerate/brake. (space bar for sit/dab or another joy buton).
This is very sensitive, hard but very good for sensations, i have more control on the bike than others with pads, but it's not easier.
Use first view too have a full sim, i got 15 years of MX competition, here's my tip

Try to ride like on your bike, this game is very good for a sim.

people also underestimate the importance of a good solid bike setup.
you can ride with everything default on the stock tracks no problem.
But once you get to the bumpy nationals and the supercross tracks a good setup makes everything much easier.
a good way to learn mx sim is:
startout on the stock tracks, take it easy just get a feel of the bike.
then try to push it a little, still on the stock tracks.
after that download some smooth custom national tracks (I loved broadmeadow when i started riding MXS)
get comfortable on the bike and track.
start playing a bit with setups, see what works for you.
then graduately build up the difficulty of the tracks.
once you get into setups a bit and you want to get into supercross, I recomend starting with arenacross tracks (Arenacross Practice is an easy one).
tracks that I rode on to train SX in order are :
Arenacross Practice
Anaheim 1 2009 (not 2010 which is way harder

)
houston 2008
indianapolis sx 2008.
but above all.
Dont train on a track that you don't like or don't feel comfortable on, if you don't like the track you're not going to learn much and it doesn't help the motivation either.
feeling comfortable on a track allows for a lot more experimenting with riding and setups.
hope that helps

.
