Ruts in Photoshop - Two Methods

Just sent this to a buddy via PM but thought any PS creators might like to see it as well:

To do ruts like the ones in Budds in PS, just use a lassow tool to make a selection with the shape of the outside of rut and then straight back to the other side to make a D shape.

Then use a black to white gradient with Black on the curved side and white on the straight side.

Set to multiply and blur slightly to get rid of the jagged edge.

Duplicate the layer,

inverse colors,

set to screen (you want the layer with the white edge below the dark one)

and move it out a couple of pixels.

Then just use a soft eraser to erase away a bit of the inside if needed to keep it from affecting other ruts.

I don't use that method usually. I pretty much paint all my stuff with a

100% hard brush on 100% white opacity and

then erase away the tips,

blur very slightly,

duplicate,

inverse colors,

move to the inside,

blur the black down so it odesn't leave a lip that MXS physics hate and move onto the next.

That's how the ruts on thunder valley were done, though I'm making them a bit steeper/sharper now to hold you in better.

thanks! you can also draw the "shape" of the rut with the pentool and then stroke it with a good brush size and erase the tips a few times with a brush on: "hardness" (??) 0 and a pretty big size and opaccity between 30-50 :D

Yes and no Luc. The pen tool will make the ruts very "perfect" hand drawing helps to make them less than a perfect shape to keep them from looking so CG.

As far as the hardness, I like to start on 100% hardness and use the blur to control how much softer it gets. Another fine detail, you can go in and zoom way in on the backside of the ruts and blur with a 2 or 3 pixel blur brush (don't hit the front of the rut, jsut the backside) to get rid of some of the sharpness on the back. You can also smudge and blur the inside of the darkened area to widen/soften the inside lip of the rut.

I could record me doing it, but I doubt it will be too helpful because I am using hot keys for a lot of actions.

Do a tutorial on jumps. I hate making jumps when the path isn't at a 0 or 90 degree angle. I KNOW YOU HAVE SECRETS!
