Not all tracks are the same width all around. For me, I use the "terrain.png" as a base then use the pen tool and draw out each side to make sure that it is the proper width throughout the track. I would only use Jeremy's method for an sx track because they're even width throughout the track.

Its a speed vs accuracy thing. The mini map is very small and thus the accuracy is low so just speed things up
