Erode painting/tileinfo settings

Post by checkerz »

Since we have some decent erode settings for SX finally, I thought I'd release some stuff to allow more creators to start using them.

Image

1) Blue setting:
"Into Turns" setting should be painted coming into corners until about 2/3 of the way through the turn. Turns where you want an inside line, you may want to let the INSIDE ONLY to stop being painted closer to entry. This setting allows braking bumps but has less lateral on it to prevent mega ruts entering the turns that force you into a single line. This setting I also use on starts and other straights to avoid chatter ruts especially where you cross the start at a different direction from the actual start. Finally, this setting is used on some bigger jump landings where you don't want "ruts" to form.

Code: Select all

erode_depth 6.5
erode_lower 50.0
erode_upper 150.0
erode_displacement 1.5
erode_radius 3.75
erode_inner_depth 2.25
erode_inner_radius 2.0
erode_min_slope -0.45
erode_max_slope 0.45
erode_off_speed 10.0
erode_on_speed 50.0
erode_slip_base_scale 1.0
erode_slip_scale 1.5
erode_slip_lower 0.0
erode_slip_upper 5.0
erode_downhill_scale 0.8
erode_limit 0.00 0.70 0.70
erode_limit 0.75 0.35 0.35
erode_limit 1.5 0.05 0.05
erode_lateral_scale 0.25
2) White setting:
"Corner exit" allows ruts that build up and dig down designed for corners. This setting erodes quite fast to develop more lines and should be placed at the last 33% approximately of the corner.

Code: Select all

erode_depth 5.5
erode_lower 50.0
erode_upper 120.0
erode_displacement 0.35
erode_radius 2.25
erode_inner_depth 5.55
erode_inner_radius 1.5
erode_min_slope -0.75
erode_max_slope 0.75
erode_off_speed 10.0
erode_on_speed 16.0
erode_slip_base_scale 1.0
erode_slip_scale 1.0
erode_slip_lower 0.0
erode_slip_upper 5.0
erode_downhill_scale 0.8
erode_limit 0.00 3.00 6.00
erode_limit 0.45 1.0 5.00
erode_limit 0.95 0.50 3.00
erode_limit 1.5 0.35 1.35
erode_limit 2.25 0.05 1.05
erode_limit 3.25 0.05 0.05
erode_lateral_scale 1.5
3) Tan setting:
"Jumps" allows ruts that mainly dig down into jump faces and works well in whoops as well.

Code: Select all

erode_depth 5.5
erode_lower 50.0
erode_upper 120.0
erode_displacement 0.15
erode_radius 3.0
erode_inner_depth 5.55
erode_inner_radius 1.5
erode_min_slope -0.75
erode_max_slope 0.75
erode_off_speed 10.0
erode_on_speed 16.0
erode_slip_base_scale 1.0
erode_slip_scale 1.0
erode_slip_lower 0.0
erode_slip_upper 5.0
erode_downhill_scale 0.8
erode_limit 0.00 4.00 6.00
erode_limit 0.45 2.50 5.00
erode_limit 0.95 0.80 4.00
erode_limit 1.5 0.35 3.35
erode_limit 2.25 0.25 3.25
erode_limit 3.25 0.05 2.05
Sand Turn exit:
Painted the same as typical turn, but has different settings for erode.

Code: Select all

erode_depth 5.5
erode_lower 50.0
erode_upper 120.0
erode_displacement 0.5
erode_radius 2.5
erode_inner_depth 5.55
erode_inner_radius 1.75
erode_min_slope -0.65
erode_max_slope 0.65
erode_off_speed 10.0
erode_on_speed 16.0
erode_slip_base_scale 1.0
erode_slip_scale 1.0
erode_slip_lower 0.0
erode_slip_upper 5.0
erode_downhill_scale 0.8
erode_limit 0.00 3.00 6.00
erode_limit 0.45 3.00 5.00
erode_limit 0.95 3.00 5.00
erode_limit 1.5 2.0 3.35
erode_limit 2.25 1.25 2.25
erode_limit 3.25 0.25 1.05
erode_limit 3.75 0.05 1.05
erode_lateral_scale 1.5

Sand straight setting:
Painted on sand straights/corner entries (similar to blue corner entry setting, painted for first 2/3 into turn). Warning, this setting will cause bigger braking bumps.

Code: Select all

erode_depth 7.5
erode_lower 50.0
erode_upper 150.0
erode_displacement 2.0
erode_radius 4.00
erode_inner_depth 3.25
erode_inner_radius 2.5
erode_min_slope -0.5
erode_max_slope 0.5
erode_off_speed 10.0
erode_on_speed 50.0
erode_slip_base_scale 1.0
erode_slip_scale 1.5
erode_slip_lower 0.0
erode_slip_upper 5.0
erode_downhill_scale 0.8
erode_limit 0.00 2.0 2.0
erode_limit 0.75 1.5 1.5
erode_limit 1.5 1.05 1.05
erode_limit 2.00 0.5 0.75
erode_limit 3.00 0.05 0.05
erode_lateral_scale 1.75

Thanks checkers this will most definitely help! I have a question though. If I wanted to use these settings on a outdoor track could I just increase the depth and radius to have a bigger/deeper ruts and breaking bumps. sorry I have not messed around much with the erode settings...

For outdoors, I would increase the displacement setting on the turn entry and not touch the radius. For deeper, I would look at the bottom limit settings or just up the value on the server side a touch. You can get bumps to form faster also using the bottom limit settings.

So I started testing your erode settings in nationals (I have not changed anything) and I have ran into major choppiness in ruts.
my terrain scaling is 1.0 so I'm kinda positive that this is a big issue, as I see the sx tracks are like .3 or something.
So now I'm going to try to tune these setting to were its lot better for bigger scaling. Checkers in your post you said not to increase the radius but I feel the ruts create sharp edges and are just too small in general to ride smooth. But like I said, I don't really know what the settings do lol.

here are some images of the track after erode.

the second to last image is the erode in the sand and as you can see its really bumpy. but I think this was just because I had a high erode level (6). but what seems interesting is the blue "into turns" was pretty ride able and was not too choppy. but the white "corner exit" was extremely choppy. I will increase the displacement settings and radius and I will see what happens.

- test 2

I increased the displacement and the radius of all the settings. Overall I guess it was a improvement? but I still had the same effects. it kinda just dug deeper but still had the same choppy effects of the first test. I lowered the erode level to 4 instead of 6 and rode for 20 minutes.

The lower speed corners seem to work well but the higher speed sweeping corners just don't work well. I can't tell if its because the erode is too high and that's a problem, but I don't think erode at 4 will have this extreme effects. Also, the straights are abysmal. extreme chop is just every were. it doesn't feel like the erode is tracking the tire its almost like skipping? The sand is better but still does not form the way I want the chop feels to small and does build up like sand would irl.

Overall erode on high scale tracks is just hard lol. I will try to play with the settings. some help would be greatly appreciated! :D

What erode setting are you riding on? These are developed to be ridden at 1.0 or less.

It's super tough to test by yourself unfortunately and I haven't found a good solution to get any type of accurate results. Even with 10 people for outdoors, it's tough to learn much if you're developing for a full gate.

For outdoors, I'd use a lot more of the "blue" "corner entry" setting.
