14,000 triangles is a bit excessive though. You could make the tree a bit more efficiently than that.

Yeah, I guess. But it is a pain making lods for trees because removing branches is quite noticable, and it leaves holes. That tree might be suitable if you weren't going to use many. But once you start bunching them up it would be an issue. You should easily be able to keep the triangle count below 1000.

Hmm.. Taking a look at either stalker's or arma's foliage models might prove useful. Both games have pretty well working foliage which doesn't look too bad. And in stalker's case, they're free to use in a non commercial mod.
