Here's the settings for the gear normal. If you need all of them let me know. I have the settings the same, only the strength is different on the different maps.

Go to "Map to" in the material setup and see if the Nor text is colored yellow. If so, click it twice and it should be good to go...I think.
Man, I'm so sorry for being such a noob, but I can't find Map To, and the only color box I see is the purple one in the screenshot above.

Im not familiar with 2.5, but "Texture", "Map Input", and "Map To" should be in a panel in the "material buttons" panel. Try F5. Or it should be that little sphere looking button next to the checkered thing that is under "Object Mode"

I know exactly what you're talking about in the older version. I got the new version so that I could follow YZ's tutorial and know nothing about it.
This is pretty much what it has compared to what you're talking about.

Where do you set up the actual material? Like give it a name and stuff?

I figured it out. It was probably the most simple thing you could think of. I just had to make the influence the opposite, so I made it -1.0.

Well, before it wasn't checked and I had the same problem. Wheels suggested I try changing that to negative and it still didn't help.

Set the texture to all of the materials.
