More Tutorials (Shading, Maps, Texturing, etc.)

Post by m121c »

I my opinion I think some of the top creators should team up and make some good tutorials on certain aspects of skinning that everyone seems to miss. I know these tutorials would be lengthy (pics or vid) for some but even just showing examples can help. I know that there are plenty of tutorials out there on google etc etc etc but the thing is I find it easier to learn off of something I actually WANT to do. I find it hard to learn off of a tutorial that has nothing to do with what I want to work on. It might have some of the same principles but it is still hard to learn. For example, right now I am helping skin a bike from scratch. I made some shading for the plastic but then KTM57 brought to my attention that it would be better to make AO maps. At first, I had no idea what those were. With some searching and some explination from KTM I figured out what they were and how they are made. The thing is I dont know what stuff should look like. For example, the height map, I understand what it is but I dont quiet know what it should look like in the end for a good result. I dont know, this is just my opinion, and I think are series of tutorials would really help elevate skinning in mxsim.

Example of tutorials:

AO mapping
Making a height map
Normal Mapping
Specular Mapping
Shading (plastic, metal, etc.)
Texturing (Metal, Rubber, Scratches, Chrome metal , etc.)
Tips and tricks on everyday skinning that everyone seems to miss or not use

the number 1 problem whit people that want to learn to skin is that they think its so confusing and hard and different from the basic photoshop skills, for those ho read this and want to learn how to skin, ALL photoshop tutorials can help you whit skinning!!

I understand that its not unique to mxsim. For example, if I want to learn shading, I look up on google and I find a shading tutorial on some text or even maybe a tutorial on shading on a 3d gun or something, yes that helps me a little I will say that, but It wouldn't help me as much as seeing a actual tutorial on shading plastics. On the opposite side, if there was a shading tutorial on shading the plastics on a bike, I know I could take those techniques and use it on something diffrent such as a gun, gear, helmet, etc. You get what I am saying? I guess thats just they way I learn things.

I agree with this statement on basic skinning, but when it gets to the point of details such as AO maps, Spec maps, Normal maps, Shading, and more adnvanced things it does start to get confusing to some people even if they have had plenty of photoshop experience.

I personally like this idea. I mean it makes things a ton easier when you can relate yo what you are trying to actually make. Sometimes people cant comprehend as good as others. But if even a small amount of these would get done it could help the community grow a bit more.

Some fresh tutorials certainly would be welcomed by those of us that make skins, models, tracks etc.I know from my own experience that the tutorials that are out there are a great help but there's still many areas that need to be covered in more depth.I would make some but I'm only just learning myself but will try to make some in the future.

Me personally Boblob801.....Earthsculptor techniques,Photoshop techniques for track making and skin making and placing objects using max or blender would probably be at the top of my list. There are a few out there but they arnt that clear and they're kinda old,I'm sorta new to this kinda thing and keen to be a good track maker.Any help is always appreciated as I'm makin' a replica of the Wanganui MX.....I'll send you the link if you wanna test it for me?

I’ve planned on making some tutorials but I don’t have a screen recording program. Can someone recommend a good program that they use? I need it to record everything I’m doing, even in and out of game...

Fraps as a function that allows you to record your screen and you can just stop start it to get ingame aswell.

If Motoboss is going to make some I think I might as well leave it to him. I can do basic heighmaps and textures/spec/normal's (For tracks) in Photoshop. I seem to do ok with blender as far as modeling goes, I can bake maps in 3ds and curve banners for the ground in 3ds as well.
