Go ride across an over under bridge once and then get back to us about how you think riding across a collision with 40 riders elbow to elbow is a good idea. Doing it via terrain is definitely the best idea currently.

Instead of a bump where you'll likely get the object clipping through terrain, I would look into adding ruts behind (and even in front) of the gate and having the gate sitting on an elevated or flat platform. Think of the gate being on a tabletop with the area before and after the gate dropped or just where the ruts are going up and down over the "tabletop".

It's something I think that may help spread out the first turns a bit adding a bit more skill to the starts, but could also cause havoc going over the gate. Only testing will tell.

I'd rather have a sound file of the gate hitting the dirt before we get a "start bump".

no point really. in real life you are concentrating so hard you dont really notice the bump
