How to play with a controller

This could just be a really dumb question beings I’m new to playing pc games but I have a wired Xbox one controller and if I plug it in. It turns on and every thing but I don’t know how to make it do anything in game it just doesn’t do anything is there some thing I have to do before entering the game to make it work? Or is there something in game to switch to a controller?
