Specular x Diffuse maps

Today I was reading about diffuse and specular maps, I was wondering, what is the real difference between both masks?
As I could understand (not sure) Specular maps seems to evidences all the levels in a rough surface, with a deep reflection. Diffuse maps, applies to stronger reflections, but for smooth surfaces, not as rough as specs. Am I correct? Could someone explain how it works and how it aply to mxs? What can I understand by Hybrid normals?
thanks in advance

Diffuse map: The colour of the object
Normal map: Fakes geometry by modifying the lighting
Specular map: Determines the brightness/colour/sharpness of the specular reflection
