Try toggling "Ground Mipmaps" and "Framebuffer Objects" in the Graphics/Sound Setup menu.

Make sure you restart the game after you change them.

Try following yzmxer's graphics driver tutorial.

A GTX 480 should definitely work if the drivers are installed correctly.

If you have "Ground Texture Resolution" turned up, set it to 256x256. 1024x1024 will use an enormous amount of memory. I should probably take that setting out.

Also, what does is say under "Driver Info"?

You need to turn off "Ground Mipmaps" for Intel graphics. Intel's drivers claim to have the extension for that but don't actually implement it. The latest drivers fixed it for my Intel laptop.
