Connecting an Xbox controller

So i plugged my xbox controller into my laptop and it downloaded something automatically but I still cant use it in the game. Do I need to put some folders somewhere or download other stuff? Configure something? Im at a loss! Plus I suck at non arcade on the keyboard :(
Any help would be great so I can enjoy this awesome game!

Have you set it up under "Customize Controls" in the game?
