xbox controller help

so i got an xbox 360 controller and adapter for my pc and downloaded all the software but for some reason when i plug in the adaptor my comp doesnt recognize it. can somebody please help P.S. im using windows vista

I assume this is the wireless xbox 360 controller.

does a light turn on on the reciever when you plug it in the pc?
did you install the drivers before pluging it in?
have you tried all available usb ports on your pc?
have you tried restarting?
