Decals.

Post by Voutare »

I've been searching for about 3 hours now for a decent dirt texture, and I can't find any.

Whenever I lay down the dirt textures I have, they alway seem to look to tiled and very unrealistic.

I've been looking through Gordy and DJ's textures, to see how they did it, and I've got the transparent background, with a fade like the Thunder Calley textures, size 512x512, but they never look 'right.

Where are you getting your textures? Are you making them yourselves, or are you picking them off google?

And sort of off topic, I noticed that Thunder Valley has a different offtrack dirt, that isn't a decal (has no indicators when you scroll over it with decal).

Is this what I am missing, or what?

I get dirt textures off google, and feather the image selection by like 30-50, then inverse selection, and delete the outside bits

Photoshop or GIMP?

I'm using GIMP, so it's probably all different.

my off track textures are a decal too, just big ones, so the arrows arent as close together.
i use a similar method to DJ, i use a dirt texture as a base then normally change the tones in them to suit my track.
i also recommend using a decal of "ruts" to layer over the top of the track, makes the track look pretty snazzy.

I didn't notice any defined ruts like there were on Dallas, on thunder though.

I thought about making them, but I'm still a fairly shitty Gimper, so I'm not sure if I could pull it off. (Same with tiretracks, and tearoffs, both of which I want to do.)

EDIT:

Nice site with some good textures.
