Re: Whats your pc?
I looked quickly at the i5 4690k, and it's a 4core 3.5ghz cpu? I currently have an AMD FX4100, and it's 4core 3.4GHz. So the difference to me is 0.1GHz. What am I missing that makes the intel CPU twice as expensive and better?

Re: Whats your pc?
Picked up a new TV, the old 720p just wasn't cutting it anymore. The game looks so much better now! My old screen was 32" but I went with a 40" this time around. Glad I spent the little extra money, so much nicer.

Re: Whats your pc?
I have a 4770k which is essentially the same and I like mine. The main advantage was thermal dissipation and heat transfer from the 4770-4790 but mine does just fine.motokid499 wrote:Anybody have the intel core i7 4790k?
Thoughts on it?
SSHH! No! AMD's market lives on people who think like that. The clock is a very little peice of what the CPU does and how it performs. The CPU will most likely need a cooler, as it overheats to the point of throttling itself because its very power hungry. The AMD FX isn't a bad chip as it does perform well but the motherboards are so hard to recommend because of how long its been since AMD has done anything with them and its older tech, I'm sure you can tell by the ports and slots on the board. So, while I'm fine with the AMD processors as a whole the motherboards bottleneck the rest of the system (SATA3 not SATA6 for HD speed, PCI lanes, RAM speeds, energy efficiency, ports for internal (fans or usb) and external, etc) and that is the main reason I recommend Intel.Wahlamt wrote:I looked quickly at the i5 4690k, and it's a 4core 3.5ghz cpu? Like the looks of that setup. Proper use of a mini PC.aeffertz wrote:Picked up a new TV, the old 720p just wasn't cutting it anymore. The game looks so much better now! My old screen was 32" but I went with a 40" this time around. Glad I spent the little extra money, so much nicer.

This reminds me, anyone here do any game streaming? Thought about doing it to the living room for splitscreen games I have on Steam but not sure what that means for the controllers.
Re: Whats your pc?
Why would you not buy a monitor for a pc? Explain yourself!
Re: Whats your pc?
Because this can serve two purposes, my actual TV and a really nice screen for my computer. Baller on a budget!Racers52 wrote:Why would you not buy a monitor for a pc? Explain yourself!
That computer is solely for gaming, I do all my regular computer shit on my laptop.

Re: Whats your pc?
I got this little wireless keyboard with touchpad so I don't need a regular mouse. I can lay in bed and use my PC to watch YouTube or browse the internet, so it's really nice for stuff like that, too.

Re: Whats your pc?
Its the highest performing "mainstream" CPU from Intel. Above it you get into 2011 or 2011-3 socket motherboards with 6-8 core CPUs but it costs a lot more. I have a 4790k in my work computer and it runs a slight OC 24/7 and I have yet to have a problem with it holding me back since I built the computer like 6-9 months ago. If you are planning on heavy multitasking and are on a budget ($1200 or under) it is a good CPU for sure.motokid499 wrote:Anybody have the intel core i7 4790k?

I5-4690k=7,756
FX-4100=4,039
I think those numbers speak for themselves. Along with what Puma said, you will easily be able to get a 10-15% OC on the I5 if you choose, AMD chips in my experience are a littler harder to get those numbers out of because they are already hot as hell at stock clocks. On top of that the VRM on your Mobo better be stout if you are going to OC a AMD chip. I had a hard time getting the FX 8350 in my render node to run at stock clocks on a budget Mobo.
Depending on what your goals are and what mobo you currently have you could upgrade to a hex or octa core AMD processor to save some $$$. It depends, for flat $/performance ratio on computing power alone AMD wins. For usability and real world desktop applications Intel wins.
Re: Whats your pc?
Oh, than I guess I fell into that trap haha. Hmm, okay. Well to me it feels like intel is always trying to develop their CPU's while AMD is putting more effort into their graphic-card. But I read very little on computer hardware. So are all AMD M/B's sata3?Pumaxcs wrote:SSHH! No! AMD's market lives on people who think like that. If I go with the 4690k, would you recommend the standard heatsink/fan or another one? I will most likely not overclock.
I've never used a benchmark, but I know you're testing the efficiency or similar with them. So almost the double, that's quite a lot better performance. I won't overclock, to begin with. No intentions in that area. I'll just play mxsim, mw2, ghosts, render some tutorials/videos, photoshop and mess around.SMR 510RR wrote: Passmark Benchmark scores:

You've at least convinced me to get an intel next time!
On another subject, how often do you clean your dust out of your PC's? And how often do you change the thermal paste?

Re: Whats your pc?
Thermal paste almost never, maybe every 3-5 years if you are super picky but is not normally something that needs replaced. Dust, depending on your surround can change. I do mine about every 3 months because my dog is a shedding whore but you may not need to as often. For no overclocking the stock heatsink is fine.
Re: Whats your pc?
Anyone wanna donate $1000 to the "Get John23 a computer" foundation.

Ah that's good! Than I won't need to worry for at least another few years. I have never cleaned it properly, maybe it's time now than... Okay! Than I won't need to mess with that either, which is goodPumaxcs wrote:Thermal paste almost never, maybe every 3-5 years if you are super picky but is not normally something that needs replaced. Re: Whats your pc?
Cleaning will depend a lot on your case. Some are better than others with filters that actually catch stuff. My dogs hair hardly gets into my computer even though it sits on the ground. Every month or two I pull the filters off and use the vacuum to get all the hair and fuzzy junk off them.
