UTV/Side X Side

I've heard conversation coming out of animal pens that is more intelligent than what is going on in here.

Any race-prepared rally raid car costs way more than $75K, the RZR900XP that finish the 2012 Dakar rally in 43rd or so costed $30K with all the modifications

The capacity of UTVs to overcome obstacles is in some middle point between SUVs and Jeeps, which is not bad at all. Btw, having a tiny vehicle works GREAT when it comes to offroading

When I was really young (5-6 years) my parents had some slightly tuned Lada Niva (suspension was 5cm longer than normal and it wore offroad tires) and they used to go with their offroad friends to some quite tough excursions (300-400km 90% offroad in a single day) and I've seen many photos of Cherokees, Defenders 100 (the 90 had no problems), Pajeros, Escudos/Vitaras and even a Patrol GR getting stucked in some mudhole or some tight crest while the Niva happily passed though the engine was quite bad (around 105hp)

Why?? Shorter wheelbase, a lot lighter and the stock manual differential lock (if your offroad car doesn't have it, it means it's shitty. Seriously, a good driver knowing how to use the diferential lock can make WONDERS)

I know no UTV will be ever close to a Niva... but I'm sure they can be lots of fun

Nah, difflocks are for people who don't know how to drive offroad. My brother in law has one of the worst off road cars around (crew cab isuzu pickup) but walks all over tricked out land cruisers which have difflocks. You're right though....short wheel base is good in some cases, little suzuki samurais can get anywhere. Not so great over snow drifts though.

Thats completely untrue. Give a pro driver a vehicle without diff locks and the same one with diff locks and see which gets further. Even cars that race on asphalt use differential clutches.

Haha obviously diff locks are superior for off road...it was said mainly tongue in cheek. ;) Just saying they can be used to cover up some poor driving and line choices.

Yes, the Lancer EVO has one of the best ever differentials for slippery conditions. I wish there was some crazy gearhead that would make a GM-powered Lada Niva with the differentials from a Lancer EVO. That would be simply unstoppable
Also, differential locking works great when your wheels have extremely different loads on them or are on different grip conditions (like 1 on a rock, 1 on a puddle and the other 2 over the mud)

Cpt. Slow, seriously. You should try some true offroading (somewhere where a Tundra would be 100% useless), you'll end up wishing you had even better differentials

I'm not an idiot, I do realise how much better diff locks are...perhaps I should have put some kind of smiley after my sentence.

Please elaborate on "True Off Roading" bearing in mind I come from the UK where deep mud, hills, rocks and rivers are a-plenty. ;)

Real offroading differs from place to place. West US real offroading normally means rockcrawling. Here on the east coast it normally means tight woods.

Just to clarify there, the Isuzu isn't stock but still couldn't touch the Samurai anywhere other than some basic green laning where the added comfort is a bonus. :P I wasn't trying to say the car was a good off roader, I was using it as an example where people think once difflocks are engaged their brain can be disengaged.

Yeah, exactly...wanted to know what Die defined it as to see if I've tried it or not. :) Not claiming to be an expert here by any means, I've just been defending my earlier post. :P
