250 or 450?

I've heard conversation coming out of animal pens that is more intelligent than what is going on in here.

250 or 450?

Post by James Cryer »

I'm looking into a new bike. I'm torn between a YZ250 and a YZ450F, I don't know which one would be better. I love hitting ramps, but I also love hitting tracks. What's the weight difference between a 250F and a 450F?

How many years have you riding a bike?

A little over a year. I just keep having problems with ramps. Today I went out to a local compound and my bike just couldn't get anything on the supercross track. I had to really force a seat bounce to do anything.

The wet weight of a 2012 YZ250F is 103kg (227lbs)
The wet weight of a 2012 YZ450F is 111.5kg (245.8lbs)

If you have being riding for a year I would go the 250f but if you are confident enough and have ridden a 450 before and know how much power they have, I would go with the 450f. :)

go with a 250 two stroke. You get the power of a 450 with the weight of a 250f. not to mention they cost less money in the long run

Every bit of advice you just offered is completely wrong and irrelevant. Congratulations.

go with a 250 2 stroke. A little heavier than a 250f, and has about 8-10hp for than a 250f (depending). I cant ride a 250f. Not enough power for me, and 4 strokes arent snappy enough. Like look at me now. I just got back from the track, and I holeshotted and lead the whole moto both times and won. I was racing against 2 2012 kx450s, an rmz 450, a couple yz450's, and an rm250. the 4 strokes were having a tough time keeping up. Not to mention 4 strokes dont handle as well as 2 strokes, arent nearly as flickable, arent as fun, and arent practical for your everyday rider. Everyone will say different, but thats my $0.02

I could ride C class at a race and do the same thing you say you just did, on a 250F. Sounds more like you're in the wrong class, than two strokes being better. Not to mention, dude said he wanted to get either a 250F, or a 450F. Why is the question so hard to understand that you can't even pick one of the two options he offered?

From the pictures of James I have seen I would say stick to the 450.

He's saying that if he rode a class that was slower than him, he could do it. Not that you're slow.

I want to stick on a 250F because of how fun they are, but I planned on racing the Arenacross and Supercross series in Colorado next year. Yesterday I had so much trouble on my bike even doing a simple 40ft double out of a turn, it just screwed the entire rhythm section up for me. I think I am going to go with the 450F. Thanks for the help guys.

I can take the holeshot against my buddy that rides a YZ250 on my KX250F. He just sucks at concrete gates. Even Alessi can get the holeshot on his 350 against 450s just because he is really good at starts. So even though it's awesome that you can pull a holeshot against 450s, it doesn't mean much in this circumstance. Congrats though.

Sounds like a corner speed issue to me. Although, a 450 will definitely get you that out-of-the-turn umph.

My honest opinion is, If you question if you need the 450 then you do not need it. Simple as that, as for clearing jumps out of corners it is all in corner speed. You just need more seat time and you will get it, bigger bike is a band aid. JMO

Yeah. Your speed is determined by skill, not your locomotive.

The track has weeds all over it, it isn't like a regular track where it looks nice. The turns are tight 180s that have a single rut that you have to follow. I can get over it sometimes, but if I mess up the slightest there is no way. It kind of takes out of the fun factor when you can't set up for a smooth run through a section.
