2019 North West 200: Thursday Races Stats, Facts Round Up

Round up of some of the most interesting stats, facts to emerge from Thursday’s top draw race action at the FonaCAB International North West 200 In Association With Nicholl Oils.

Sole Triumph mounted racer to finish the Tides Restaurant Supersport race, was RAF Regular & Reserves backed Gary Johnson. Johnson also jointly topped the speed trap timing’s on the approach to University, setting a quickest speed of 177.7 mph, that was also matched by PreZ Racing’s Jamie Coward.

In total 20 competitors nudged past the 170 mph barrier, with Matt Rees and Daley Mathison each exactly the 170 mph mark.

26 riders topped the 110 mph lap mark, during the six lap race, including newcomers Nathan Harrison and Joe Loughlin. Just eight of the 33 race finishers, finished on the lead lap.

Whilst Lee Johnston’s race victory, was not only his fourth Triangle course success, it’s also his first International roads success, since the second Supersport encounter from the 2015 Ulster Grand Prix.

Buildbase Suzuki’s Richard Cooper, pace on route to an excellent top six placing within the Bayview Hotel Superstock race, was so potent that in the process he officially became the quickest NW200 newcomer in history!

The fourth lap of the opening Superstock encounter, saw Darley Moor specialist Cooper set a best lap time of 4 minutes 27.631 seconds, equating in mph terms to an average speed of 120.659 mph.

Winner of last night’s Superstock race, Peter Hickman’s successful stint aboard the Smiths BMW, took his total of NW200 triumphs into triple figures, plus raised his already impressive International roads victories total, to 13.

To put into context, how good a record this is to hold, Hickman has only been competing on the roads for six years, since first joining the International roads fraternity in 2014 at the North West.

Third behind Hickman, in Thursday’s Superstock race, it’s easy to underestimate how good a performance it was from Michael Dunlop.

Prior to the NW200, the Ballymoney racer hasn’t competed at any race meeting, whether it be short circuit or roads based.

Despite the lack of track time, in comparison to his respected rivals, it’s made it seems no difference at all to the 18 times TT winner, who continues to prove that the impossible is possible.

Stefano Bonetti’s memorable MCL Insure Tech Super Twins victory, makes him not only Italy’s first North West 200 winner, he’s also his nations first International roads winner of the 21st century.

Following Bonetti’s popular victory, Paton have now enjoyed success at the ‘Big Three’ International roads events, the NW200, Ulster GP and TT Races.

Opening Twins race runner up Jamie Coward, finished no lower than seventh in all of Thursday night’s Triangle course encounters.

Hebden Bridge’s finished third on the Super Twins speed trap times sheet, hitting the 163 mph mark. Heading the Twins class speed trap timing’s in front of Coward and class pace setter Bonetti, was KMR Kawasaki’s Michael Rutter, with a best speed of 165.8 mph.

We're having a very merciful roadracing season so far. Fingers crossed, keep praying, voodoo etc. for a safe season. It's weird, I can't believe that we don't have William Dunlop, James Cowton or Dan Kneen anymore. Imagine every SX season there's three or four less top riders on the gate. I'd really like to see John McGuinness get back to winning and beat Joey Dunlop's record of 26 wins.

Yeah I know that every year there are some major crashes and some guys pass away. Crazy that they go that fast and literally put their life on the line.

Motorsport should be categorized as a mental illness. Think how many come back to it after near death crashes and injuries. Matt Bisceglia's dad Don is an old friend and he shattered his hip/pelvis twice and is pretty much walking crippled. His wife too. Couldn't stay away.

There's so much to report on the NW200, that I'll just leave the summary. Peter HIckman pulled off and called it quits after many incidents and near-incidents on one corner that was slicker than the rest in the rain-soaked race.

North West 200: Saturday Races Stats, Facts Collection

Round up of a collection of intriguing stats, facts to emerge from Saturday’s race action at the 90th anniversary North West 200.

15 racers in total secured rostrum finishes, at the FonaCAB International North West 200 In Association With Nicholl Oils.

As widely already reported, there was seven different winners from the seven races that took place, including first time event victors Davey Todd and ‘Man of The Meeting’ James Hillier.

Richard Cooper’s brilliant second place finish in the CP Hire Superstock race, was Buildbase Suzuki/Hawk Racing’s first International roads podium placing since the 2017 Senior TT.

Glenn Irwin has finished no lower than eighth, in all races contested thus far at the NW200, following last week’s competition.

Despite the tricky wet, damp conditions, nine racers topped the 190 mph mark through speed trap, on the run up to University, including joint quickest Conor Cummins (196.9 mph).

Milenco by Padgetts Cummins, also headed the Supersport speed trap timing’s, powering through at 176.7 mph.

Suzuki’s sole representative within the Junction Retail & Leisure Park Supersport encounter, was Marty Lennon, who went onto claim a very creditable ninth place finish.

Just three manufacturers were represented in the J M Paterson Super Twins race, which saw Jeremy McWilliams claim a third Triangle course success.

KMR Kawasaki’s McWilliams NW200 victories total, is now the same as the likes of Artie Bell, Geoff Duke, Ray McCullough, Trevor Nation and Ian Hutchinson.

Alastair Seeley with 24 victories, remains commandingly top of the all time wins list. His latest NW200 stint, saw him for the first time in 11 years not bank at least one podium finish.

TT 2019: News From The Paddock

Just some of the interesting bits of news circulating around the TT paddock ahead of this evening’s opening practice session include, Michael Rutter being the confirmed number 1 plate holder, for the SES TT Zero race.

Mugen team mate John McGuinness carries the three plate for the innovative, electric machine based race, whilst holder of the two plate is Nottingham University’s Daley Mathison.

Competitors who the public might not have known are entrants for TT 2019, include 2013 Newcomers C Manx GP runner up Richard Wilson, Michael ‘Jack’ Russell and event returnee New Zealand’s Chris Haldane.

Plus Jonathan Perry, Rob Whittall and former Senior Manx GP winner, Mountain Course stalwart Mark Parrett.

22 of the forty plus Locate.im Sidecar entry, are Honda powered, whilst in total five manufacturers have representation via engines, with Suzuki, Yamaha and Triumph all like Honda enjoying strong representation.

Closing in on fifty percent of the RST Superbike, Dunlop Senior competitors, are S1000RR BMW mounted, whilst 20 of the 1000cc race entrants have gone ‘Team Green’, piloting Kawasaki machinery.

Forest Dunn’s latest TT quest, has received a new sponsorship boost, as the Cornwall racer links up with leading tyre retailers, Modern Tyres.

Speaking via Facebook, about the recently unveiled link up with Modern Tyres, the ever enthusiastic Dunn stated:

“Extremely proud to announce a new sponsorship and relationship with local tyre company Modern Tyres, and I can’t thank my main man Gerard Heaney enough for helping us sort this deal out!! Looking forward to a long and prosperous relationship with these guys and girls!!”

One topic in particular is on racers, teams minds ahead of tonight’s first timed practice session, the weather!

It’s not clear at present as to what the weather has in store for tonight, with competitive action at TT 2019 set to get underway presently in just over three hours time.

This is why events are held every other day for most of the TT fortnight. To allow for delays and postponements. They used to run in whatever weather they had, but now delay practice or races if the course is too wet.

TT 2019: Low Cloud, Mist Force Cancellation Of Saturday Evening’s Practice Session

Tonight’s opening timed practice session of the 2019 TT Races, has officially been called off due to low cloud, mist and all round inclement weather embarking upon the Mountain Course.

Speaking via Twitter, Clerk of The Course, Gary Thompson MBE BEM stated about this evening’s competition being cancelled:

“Tonight’s first practice is unfortunately cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Low cloud and mist is affecting the TT Course and is unlikely to improve.”

Thompson went onto add that today’s scheduled action, will now take place tomorrow with practice beginning from 1:30 PM, with roads closing at 1:00 PM.

As long as the weather holds, everything goes to plan, newcomers such as David Datzer, Lukas Maurer, Ray Casey, Jonathan Goetschy, Daniel Mettam and Ryan Crowe/Callum Crowe will gain their first laps tomorrow of the fabled, mythical Mountain Course.

Additionally the likes of Michael Dunlop, Dean Harrison, Conor Cummins, James Hillier, Ian Hutchinson, John McGuinness, Davey Todd, Derek McGee, Michael Rutter and Gary Johnson are all scheduled to open their latest TT ventures.

If practice goes ahead tomorrow, fingers crossed! a notable non participant due to his British Superbike Championship commitments, will be Superstock, Senior, outright lap record holder Peter Hickman.

TT 2019: Consistent Harrison Heads Opening Supersport Practice

Just over fifty minutes behind schedule, the combined opening Supersport practice session of TT 2019 got underway at 2:41 PM with Silicone Engineering Racing’s Dean Harrison, first to power down Glencrutchery Road.

Quickly getting back into the groove on the fabled, mythical Mountain Course it was Ulster GP lap record holder Harrison who set the initial Supersport pace, lapping from a standing start at nigh on the 122 mph lap mark.

His second lap, ‘Flying Lap’ saw him nudge past the 124 mph mark, lapping at an already impressive for first practice, average speed of 124.39 mph.

Closely matching Harrison’s pace, Michael Dunlop (123.93) slotted into second on the times sheet, whilst PreZ Racing’s Jamie Coward (123.19), Conor Cummins (123.16) third, fourth quickest were both showing a solid, accomplished turn of speed.

As Harrison continued to set series of consistent lap times, the chasing pack all upped their pace including Milenco by Padgetts Cummins (123.71), Ashcourt Racing’s Lee Johnston (122.05), Gary Johnson (122.55) and North West 200 ‘Man of The Meeting’ James Hillier (122.91).

On his and sixth final lap, Harrison upped the pace further, lapping at 126.09 mph, to ultimately finish overall quickest today to tune of plus 19 seconds over middleweight TT class lap record holder, Dunlop (123.93).

Cummins (123.71), Lightweight class pace setter Coward (123.19), Quattro Plant Wicked Coatings Kawasaki’s Hillier (122.91), lead Triumph runner Johnson (122.55) completed the top six on the practice leader board.

Whilst placing’s 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th respectively on the times sheet were clinched by seven times International Road Race victor Johnston (122.05), NW200 Supersport winner Davey Todd (121.87), Sam West having his first outing aboard the DTR supported Yamaha (121.04) and reigning Duke Road Race Rankings champion Derek McGee (121.01).

Outside the aforementioned competitors, others to quietly impress today on the fabled, mythical Mountain Course included Wilcock Consulting backed Michael Evans (120.54), Horst Saiger (119.06), Rhys Hardisty (118.13) and Cornwall’s Forest Dunn (117.66).

I expect Derek McGee will continue to have good results since he's been dominating so far this season.

TT 2019: KTS Racing’s Coward Dominates Opening Lightweight Practice Session

Reproducing some of the form that took him to Super Twins pole position, at the North West 200, Hebden Bridge’s Jamie Coward reigned supreme in the opening Lightweight practice session of TT 2019.

Piloting the proven KTS Racing Kawasaki, Coward lapped from a standing start at close to the 118 mph mark, prior to setting an excellent lap speed of 119.96 mph.

Such was Coward’s pace that class lap record holder, reigning Bennetts Lightweight TT champion, second quickest from today’s competition Michael Dunlop (118.52), was over 13 seconds down on the Yorkshireman’s pace.

Third fastest Paul Jordan (117.45) impressed in his first competitive outing aboard the Dafabet Devitt Racing Kawasaki twin, whilst fourth fastest Derek McGee (116.19) showed an accomplished turn of pace in leading the KMR Kawasaki challenge.

Under 1.8 seconds behind McGee on the overall times sheet, was SC Project Paton’s in form Stefano Bonetti (116.02).

Remaining racers to top the 115 mph mark, on route to finishing respectively sixth, seventh, eighth quickest were Gary Johnson (115.80), Paul ‘Potchy’ Williams (115.42) and the evergreen Ian Lougher (115.10).

Finalising the top ten in practice were Team ILR Paton mounted Horst Saiger (114.96) and JGH Racing/CMS supported Rob Hodson (114.84).

Others outside of the ten quickest competitors from a practice session, held in decent conditions although a touch windy, to quietly impress included James Chawke (114.20), TT rider liaison officer John Barton (113.11), Rob Whittall (111.25) and Mountain Course returnee Anthony Redmond (111.20).

Finally! It could be Dean Harrison's year to win the senior TT.
TT 2019: Harrison Leaves It Late To Top First Superbike Practice

As the relatively calm, bright, blue sky weather glistened upon the TT Grandstand, the action during the opening Superbike practice session of TT 2019, was even more sparkling, illuminating, as a who’s who of International Road Racing showcased their supreme, super human talents.

Getting underway 11 minutes behind schedule, after a Ramsey based non racing emergency, it was Milenco by Padgetts Conor Cummins setting the pace on the run to Glen Helen, just over 1.5 seconds clear of RST Superbike lap record holder Dean Harrison.

As the standing start lap went on, Cummins and Harrison continued to set the pace, closely pursued by Tyco BMW’s Michael Dunlop.

Come the completion of the lap, Cummins with a lap speed of 128.09 mph, was quickest by just over 12 seconds in front of 18 times TT winner Dunlop (126.65), with Silicone Engineering Racing’s Harrison (126.63) third fastest.

Cummins continued his impressive pace on his ‘Flying Lap’, prior to being black flagged due to reportedly smoke arising from his Honda Superbike steed.

More drama was a foot as Honda Racing’s Ian Hutchinson slid off uninjured at the 11th Milestone.

In amongst the unforeseen drama North West 200 ‘Man of The Meeting’ James Hillier was quietly going about his business, lapping just over a tenth of a second off Cummins best time, registering a lap speed of 128.07 mph.

Towards the end of the session, Superstock class pace setter, Team Green supported Harrison was starting to set ominous purple sector times, was a 130 mph lap on the cards?

The answer was not quite, still Harrison’s lap speed of 129.53 mph placed him almost 12 seconds clear of Cummins (128.09) at the top of tonight’s times sheet.

Hillier (128.07) finished third quickest, Dunlop (126.93) who looked on course late in the session for a 129 mph lap emerged fourth fastest, as RC213V-S Honda mounted Michael Rutter (126.48) and PreZ Racing’s in form Jamie Coward (126.39) respectively finished fifth, sixth fastest.

Wrapping up the top ten from an intriguing opening Superbike practice session, were David Johnson (126.19), Phil Crowe (125.52), Ian Hutchinson (125.39) and Daley Mathison (125.17).

John McGuinness (123.73) and the chrome liveried SG8 Norton finished 15th quickest, whilst the likes of Rob Hodson (122.89), Jay Lawrence (122.56), David ‘Action’ Jackson (121.78), Noel Williamson Racing’s Shaun Anderson (121.11), Frank Gallagher (119.72) all quietly impressed.

Supersport:

Out of luck on 1000cc machinery, Peter Hickman enjoyed a much more productive time aboard the factory supported TROOPER Triumph, powering to the top of tonight’s Supersport times sheet.

Lapping from a standing start at just over the 122 mph mark, his ‘Flying Lap’ saw the outright Mountain Course lap record holder lap at 123.92 mph.

Over 16 seconds down on Hickman’s pace in finishing second quickest was Ashcourt Racing’s Lee Johnston. The seven times International Road Race winner, widely tipped to contend for Monster Energy Supersport honours, registered a best lap speed of 122.05 mph.

Third quickest, under a tenth of a second behind Johnston was reigning Duke Road Race Rankings champion Derek McGee (122.04), whilst John McGuinness (119.93) reaffirmed connection with Padgetts Racing, continues to gather momentum, with the 23 times TT winner finishing a very creditable fourth quickest.

Dafabet Devitt Racing’s Paul Jordan (118.88) scooped fifth place on the times sheet, as Davies Motorsport’s Dominic Herbertson (118.35), Michael Browne (118.29), Dan Cooper (118.93), PRF Racing’s Barry Evans (117.71), James Chawke (117.58) finalised the ten quickest competitors from this evening’s Supersport action.

Ray Casey (112.74) lead the newcomers challenge, whilst fellow Mountain Course debutants David Datzer, Jonathan Goetschy recorded respective best lap speeds of (106.89) and (106.59).

Paul ‘Potchy’ Williams emerged unscathed from an incident at Governors, Manx GP graduate Jason Corcoran sustained a neck injury after an incident at Glen Helen, whilst Emmett Burke was reported to have sustained a leg injury, having encountered trouble at the Gooseneck.

Road Racing News wishes both accomplished Mountain Course exponents, a very, very speedy recovery.

Superstock:

Two times TT winner Dean Harrison lit up the Superstock class tonight on the fabled, mythical Mountain Course, showing a quite potent, relentless run of speed.

Piloting the stock spec Silicone Engineering ZX-10RR Kawasaki, Harrison’s best lap speed of 129.34 mph, proved more than enough to head the class times sheet.

Over 22 seconds quicker than nearest class challenger David Johnson (126.63), Bradford’s Harrison as at TT 2018, has quickly got into the groove this week, topping to date all four, 4 stroke class practice leader boards.

Outside of Harrison, Honda Racing’s Johnson, others to impress and some on stock machinery tonight included third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh fastest respectively, PreZ Racing’s Jamie Coward (126.39), PRL Racing’s Sam West (124.89), Ashcourt Racing’s Lee Johnston (124.49), Stefano Bonetti (124.48) and Derek McGee (124.40).

Daley Mathison (124.09) heading WH Racing’s TT challenge, finished a very respectable ninth quickest, just behind class legend Michael Dunlop (124.11) whilst 10th fastest Peter Hickman (123.08), had a challenging session aboard the Smiths Racing BMW, that he took to opening Superstock spoils at the North West 200.

Rob Hodson (122.89) placed 11th quickest, as Rob Hodson (122.89), Derek Sheils (122.78), Michael Rutter (122.42), Davey Todd (122.19) and Paul Jordan (122.19) completed the top fifteen from Tuesday’s timed practice.

The worms have finally gotten their first session in.

TT 2019: Holden/Cain Head Opening Timed Sidecar Practice, Next Gen Crews Impress

In cool, blustery but all round decent conditions on the magical Mountain Course roads, it was Silicone Barnes Racing’s John Holden/Lee Cain who set the pace in a high quality opening Sidecar practice session of TT 2019.

Holden/Cain’s standing start lap speed of 114.99 mph was more than enough to propel them to the top of the time sheets, as they underlined why they are considered one of a select group of crews who are capable of winning both of next weeks Locate.im Sidecar encounters.

Second quickest behind Holden/Cain, were the Rowtec Engineering supported duo of Pete Founds/Jevan Walmsley.

Having gone into TT 2019 it has to be said a touch under the radar, Founds/Walmsley (114.40) showcased this evening why they are not to be underestimated, and that’s there’s no doubt that they have the capabilities to contend in early June for rostrum finishes.

Third quickest this evening were Alan Founds/Jake Lowther (112.35), whilst Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes (112.35) opened their latest TT tenure in solid style, by finishing fourth fastest.

Three wheeling TT legends Ben Birchall/Tom Birchall (111.55) took sixth spot on tonight’s times sheet, behind another hungry, ambitious next generation driver/passenger partnership, the improving duo of Lewis Blackstock/Patrick Rosney (111.80).

Rounding out the ten quickest crews tonight were ultra impressive Mountain Course debutants Ryan Crowe/Callum Crowe (109.76), Conrad Harrison/Andy Winkle (108.95), Gary Bryan/Phil Hyde (108.54) and Optimark Road Racing’s Estelle Leblond/Frank Claeys (108.38).

Dave Molyneux/Harry Payne’s TT 2019 quest began with the Yamaha powered pair, not completing any timed laps, as there standing start lap saw them drop out of contention at Laurel Bank, whilst in total just 35 crews completed this evening timed practice laps.
