english question :)

Post by Servatis »

I'm looking for a word but I can't really find it since I get different results on different translators :P

I'm looking for the word for the place/box in which you can control the power for a building. like shut circuits off or turn them on. also they hold the fuses etc.

now I'm pretty sure it's not a fusebox(a bit too general of a term), I came across this one "main circuit breaker" but I'm not sure.. what word would the English speaking people use for this?

awesome. thanks.

In case you're wondering why i would be looking for that word. I'm currently creating a text adventure game for my c++ class. It's not very advanced but it's turning out pretty good :).
started Friday and it has to be finished next Friday so it's can't be that big :)..
I'll post it up here when it's finished if any of you guys are interested. hopefully before next Friday so I can use you people as guinea pigs :P

I'll post any other English questions here if I have any..

I agree with you all, the irony being that fuseboxes dont have actual fuses in them any more. At least any installed in the last 20 years.

Well. I use fusebox too but I thought you said you wanted something more specific. So, 0vs5 actually.

Fuse boxes are old school here in UK, most places use circuit breakers (MCBs or RCDs). These when combined into a control panel in your average house/ small building etc would be called a consumer unit or breaker unit if you want to be more general. For a large factory then it could be called a distribution board, or again a breaker unit.

Hope that helps. I'd go for breaker unit personally.

Breaker box, Circuit Breaker box, Fuse box.

Are you talking about those? Because any of those would work.

ok, so I had to rush it a little bit, so the looks of it aren't the best(some words get cut in 2 by the console etc.) and i tried to keep the amount of text down. The functionality of the code is the most important thing .

anyway if any of you want to give it a go here it is.

if you want, post any bugs you find here. and also the time you finished with, if you finished. :)

sorry for double post.

in case you are wondering, no I'm not using a parser. I kept the functionality simple since i only had 1 week to program it. So i just compare text 1 on 1.

btw. if you dont know what a parser is. A parser allows for a sentence to be dismantled and understood by an application on a word to word basis. example: "look out of window", would be the same as "look window" or "look through window". if the parser picks op look and window.
