Bike downshifting by itself.
Bike downshifting by itself.
Hey there,
I've been having trouble with my bike these last 2 training sessions, the problem is right after I'd up shift (specially on long and fast straights ) the bike would downshift all by itself...
The bike is a 2003 Rm 125. I'd like to know if anyone else has had this problem before, and if they know how to fix it. I've checked the engine when my crankshaft bearings broke and all the gears seemed just right, so I've no idea what it could be. The shift lever is working well too.
Kind regards,
Judge.

Re: Bike downshifting by itself.
what is it exactly doin? first thing to do would be take the clutch cover off and put your gear lever back on, with your back wheel off the ground and then select gears whilst rotating the rear wheel and see if selector arm is in place and no springs missing. Hope that works.
Does it do it in all gears or just a specific gear?

As far as I know it does it in gears around neutral... so first 2nd and 3rd.. it has also done it on 4th and 5th though...
And yeah my brother told me it is most likely the selector arm. Will have to check that, thanks for the tips.

No worries mate, just ask me for help if ya need it
Re: Bike downshifting by itself.
I have a yz125 and I had a similar problem. I would hit 4th gear and it would completely drop out of gear into false neutrals. After alot of research we found it to be the gear selector had a slight tear in it, don't ask me how it happened. Not as expensive of a job as we had expected

Re: Bike downshifting by itself.
i had the same prob on my 250f it was because i didnt use the clutch while shifting and all the gears in my tranny were rounded making the gears not drop into place. the way to fix ur prob is to either use the clutch or slightly roll of the gas when shifting.

Powershifting will destroy the bike.

Lol. +1 I learned within 2 months of starting to ride not to do that. Basicly, for offroad guys, only powershift going up big hills and only if you need to. Otherwise, chop the throttle for like a 10th of a second at the least. As for the Problem, my 09 KTM 250xc does it form first to second. but thats it, maybe try slightly more aggressive on the shifter. If you move too slowly, it wont work quickly enough and may slip.KTM57 wrote:Powershifting will destroy the bike.

Lol obviously, the bike's not a scooter, I always release the gas quite the bit to make the engine start going down ( although on the 2 stroke that's.. yeah. ) and then shift.
I must say that the downshifting problem happens mainly when powershifting though, doesn't happen as much when I drop on the gas ( but it still happens... )

Suzukis are not really known for good transmissions and a lot of hard/powershifting will give you false neutrals a lot. Im not really sure what part to replace ive heard of people replacing the shifter detent spring and it fixed it other people it didnt.Judge wrote:Lol obviously, the bike's not a scooter, I always release the gas quite the bit to make the engine start going down ( although on the 2 stroke that's.. yeah. ) and then shift.

Re: Bike downshifting by itself.
If you shift at the right rpm you don't need the clutch or release the gas at all.
As for the downshifting. I had that problem on my rmz. 3rd gear would drop and hit a false neutral.
To solve the problem we modified the gear shift cam stopper ( http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com ... A=385&B=25 ,n°24 in the middle). We made the gear shift cam going deeper by digging into the gear shift cam stopper. Since we've done that I've never had a false neutral.

Hahaha. yea. Though ive never hit a false neutral, ive hit the real onw way too many times. On The Pipe wrote: Suzukis are not really known for good transmissions and a lot of hard/powershifting will give you false neutrals a lot. Re: Bike downshifting by itself.
I agree but I do it anyway because i'm afraid of burning out my clutch, what should I do?KTM57 wrote:Powershifting will destroy the bike.

Re: Bike downshifting by itself.
Just let off a little bit and shift, or fan the clutch for just long enough to shift. You'll mess up more than your clutch when you powershift.
