they're a team of riders = they are a team of rider = they "are" looking for riders..
they is a team of riders = they is a team of riders = they is looking for riders (doesn't really work does it)


I think in this case both would suffice depending on what you are defining a team as...
if a team is a single "object" then you can use is
if a team is a group of people then it would be are...

That said i think people that have terrible grammar should be cut down first
