The 2016 MotoOption Supercross Series presented by Race Tech drops the first gate of the season in less than 24 hours. The top try-harders in MXSimulator are breaking in (or just breaking) their fresh controllers trying to run as many fast laps as possible before the opening round. The race tomorrow night will be broadcast LIVE on StartYourSystemsTV, and before the show it is important to know who to watch at the opening round. Below is a list of some of the faces you will likely see on the podium or at the hardware store looking to replace their window after a monitor 'malfunction' during the main event.
*Honestly there are probably 15+ guys that could win the opener and no one would be too shocked, I will write about as many as I can before I lose motivation and rage quit typing.
**These are meant for entertainment, please laugh with me as no disrespect is meant for any of you. Clearly each of you is a complete bad-ass to be even considered to winning a single race in this demanding series.
The Contenders
#1 - Hunter "The Mole" Root
The defending MotoOption Supercross champion Hunter Root teamed up with the winningest rider in MXS SX history, Tysen Fresquez and dedicated himself to stealing all of the intel that captured Fresquez two SX titles. "The Mole" then turned on Fresquez, and the afterburners to capture the 2015 championship. Now that he has stolen all the intel he needs from Tysen, Root has moved on to Team Splitfire to gather all the info he can from the most dominant rider in the offseason, Ryan Mahan. Root may be playing it low key that he is trying everything in his power to swim to another championship by not signing up for the event to show his qualifying time, but even an amateur investigator can find that he has logged a 1:00.429 time that will currently slate him at the top of the qualifying list. Root will be looking to take on the competition head on aboard a Splitfire KTM at A1.
#4 Jeremy "Bedtime" Smith
While his excuse for sandbagging the 250 classes for so long was the timing interfering with his bedtime, but don't sleep on Jeremy Smith. Second place in last year's championship and currently listed as the 3rd fastest qualifier with a 1:01.078, Smith will be a threat. Also known for being as consistent as his bedtime argument, Jeremy knows how to manage a race and be there all 20 laps. If "Bedtime" gets his priorities straight and puts his real racing career on hold to capture MXS glory in the MotoOption SX Series, the field had better watch out. Smith will be lining up for Team TBR at Anaheim 1.
#21 - Tysen "Bad Bud" Fresquez
Fooled by a "Mole" with some "Bad Bud" in 2015, Fresquez is free from the Barry prison for 2016 and looking to get back to smoking the competition. Currently without a qualifying lap logged, Tysen may have forgotten about the race or still busy burning down the laps in time trial. Either way, we expect the #21 to be on the gate at Anaheim 1 on a Team Volcolm Kawasaki creating a buzz throughout the event.
#9 - Jesse "Lots-a-Laps" Mullins
Fourth in the series in 2015, Mullins traded in his many laps around the track to camping out in corners and stopping terrorists. Looking to bring his sneaky tactics to ninja defuse the competition at A1, Mullins is sandbagging an 11th place qualifying time. If he can dodge enough bullets early in the race, look for lots of laps to come on strong late in the race when other riders lose focus after too many times around the track. Lots-a-laps will be lining up for Team TBR at the opening round.
#7 - Alexis "Bobblehead" Leclair
Alexis Leclair has shown he can poke his head to the front of the pack, whether racing or qualifying bouncing to some of the fastest laps the game has ever seen. Failing to bring home the championship the past two seasons is likely making Leclair's head want to explode, so we'll see if he can spring that energy forward to a title for 2016. A1 will be a true test for the "Bobblehead" as whoops have been an issue in the past, and the track features a set of coffins capable of causing even the best riders to raise the white flag. No one knows what team Leclair will ride for at A1, but wherever he pops up, we are excited to see the #7 line up for another season when the gate drops at the opener!
#12 - Race "The General" Karlin
Always fast, but rarely the fastest has been the story for Karlin in the past. For 2016 Race has been promoted to General, has intel from the 2015 Champion as his teammate on Team Splitfire, and spied his way to early access to the tracks by placing the decals. Everything looks like it could finally lineup for the German warrior to cook the competition at the opener. Karlin is hoping things go better for his squad than WWII as he's been working hard at the camp during the offseason and currently is qualified 4th fastest with a 1:01.296. The General will be riding a Team Splitfire KTM that has been hacked together for the series.
The Sleepers (no, not Jeremy Smith)
#37 - Ryan "The Flyin' Ohian" Mahan
I have nothing clever to say about Mahan. The guy has been absolutely ripping in the offseason and hasn't really done anything other than go fast to draw attention to himself in doing so. Currently qualified 5th fastest for the race. Team Splitfire
#32 #22 #65 - "The Family"
Joining a new team together, currently qualifying in the top 10 together, and probably sharing mothers, girlfriends, and hookers; this three headed monster child of Jack Haley, Brady Standley, and Craig Richards could wake up the field like a nightmare with a surprise performance at Anaheim 1... that is if they can keep the domestic violence down and not let their lag bubbles pop eachother over the berm. And they ride for Race Tech, so clearly they will be crushing the whoops like cans at a frat house at the opening round. Team FAMmx/Race Tech will be well represented when the gate drops at Anaheim.
#28 - Luke "Gravedigger" Heberlein
Coming off impressive performances at the FAMmx.com Fall Cup, The Grave Digger has been crushing much of the competition. Unfortunately, late in the races, the wheels have been falling off for the #28. Will Heberlein be able to re-engineer his mud-bogger in time to capture a victory at the opener? He's currently qualified 12th fastest, a couple of seconds off the top times. Only time will tell if he can smash his way to victory tomorrow night.
