PR-US OPEN OF MXS NIGHT 1 REPORT
US Open of MXS presented by Team DXB and Limited Decal, and official MXS Championship Night 1 Report
PRESS RELASE
Phoenix, AZ – November 20, 2010
The richest event in MXS racing history went off last night with over $250 of cash and prizes on the line for the top MXS racers from around the world. Privateer Team Barry added himself to the favorites list heading into the first night of racing by being the only rider to notch a sub-50 second lap time in qualifying. Coming off the 2010 Outdoor Track Comp Championship, Juan carried a lot of momentum into the event, as well as reigning Supercross champion ShackAttack couldn’t be counted out.
Over 130 riders attempted to qualify for this inaugural event; however, timed qualifying dwindled the field to 45 of the fastest MXS pilots for the heat races. As the heat races got underway, a slippery and challenging track kept the racers on their toes. Team Barry proved his lap times in qualifying were no fluke as he handily took the heat one victory. Mittocs re-affirmed himself as a top MXS contender with a solid second in the heat and a straight transfer to the main event. Heat 2 saw 2010 MXS Supercross champion ShackAttack on his DJ’s Yamaha grab the win followed by Team DXB/Limited Decal rider DJ_Diehl. It appeared Team Barry, ilabb rider Mittocs, ShackAttack, and DJ Diehl were going to be the class of the field in the main event.
Only the top 3 riders went from the LCQ to the main event, and the tension was running high Knowing not qualifying for night one all but eliminates you from chasing in on the richest purse in MXS history, a first turn pile up was all but guaranteed. The carnage let Team DXB/Limited Decals riders DDMX and Checkerz separate themselves from the field early in the race. Team Aggressive Graphix rider Sweendoggy, MXER323, FABMX and FSK’s Joe Sawler were left to battle over the final transfer. A last lap crash by DDMX allowed Checkerz to take the win, DDMX remounted to safely transfer in second, and FABMX edged out the field for the last transfer to the night 1 main at the US Open of MXS Championship.
Starting from a field of over a 130 entrants, only 15 remained on night one as the main event was set to go off. Sweendoggy TV broadcasted live as ShackAttack ripped the LimitedDecal.com Holeshot on his DJ’s Racing Yamaha and set out to leave the field in the dust. Team FSK’s Kawasaki’s put his #46 up into second with DXB/Limited Decal rider DDMX managing a top three start after coming from the LCQ. ShackAttack mounted himself over a 15 second lead by mid-race, but team ilabb’s Mittocs was putting down consistant laps and found himself in the second spot. As the leaders started dealing with lappers, ShackAttack began having issues and Mittocs closed the gap. After ShackAttack was taken down in the tunnel, Mittocs took off with the lead. An infuriated ShackAttack drove inside and took the lead back with an aggressive pass on the #721 Suzuki. Mittocs got up and kept his cool only to repass ShackAttack a lap later and take home the victory. Team Barry found himself at the tail end of the top 10 off the start, and things were looking bleak for the standout in the qualifying events. About the halfway point, Barry threw the hammer down and started clicking off 50 second lap times and bumping riders backwards. At the checkered flag, team ilabb’s Mittocs took the win followed by DJ’s Racing Yamaha rider ShackAttack and the privateer Team Barry passed DXB/Limited Decal’s rider Hegge in the last corner to steal the final podium spot.
The Triple Threat Scoring really came into play for the top 3 finishers, as 3 bonus points are awarded to the rider with the fastest lap as, as well as, 3 bonus points for the winner of the Limited Decal Holeshot Award. With a holeshot, second fastest lap bonus, and a second place finish, Team DJ’s Yamaha rider ShackAttack leads the points into night two with 28 points. Mittocs sits second with 25 points, and after earning the fastest lap of the main and a third place finish, Team Barry stays in the hunt with 23 points.
Mittocs made it 2 for 2 on the night also taking home the 125 exhibition race after a late race pass on JLV. MXER323 took third and the final podium spot for the 125 race.
