What's a normal amount of faces for a trackside object, like let's say a vehicle?

I've downloaded some free to use models, but they're all pretty detailed/high poly. Like this helicopter I'm working on has 10,000 faces. I'm learning about the decimate modifier and am just curious how far down I should bring that number so it doesn't bog the game down.

Obviously it depends on what it is. You normally want to keep things to a minimum without it looking terrible. It's a lot easier to tell if you show us the object and tell us the level of detail you're happy with. I would personally say 10k is too much even for something as unique as a helicopter.

Probably just best to retopo it to end up with good geometry at the end. Will be a lot easier to get a solid UV with decent geometry.

My semi is 1,700 polys for example so roughly 3,400 tris but it LODs down to a little over 1/2 of that.

Here's the blend file if you guys wanna have a look. And here's a picture if you don't want to download it.

It doesn't need to be too detailed, but the less work it is for me, the better.
I figured 10,000 was too much, but with my limited knowledge (read: none) I was hoping maybe I could sneak by with like, 8,000 or something. The plan is just for it to be sitting on the side of the track, so it really doesn't need most of the things modeled to have nearly as many faces or even be there. Like this...

I found the decimate modifier didn't do that great of a job. Am I better just going through and merging/deleting (if that's possible) a lot of those faces manually? Can I skate by without having to bake a norm you think?

Fuck me you could easily half that. Your semi is different because it's a square but the helicopter is curved so it'll need more but you could go less than 5k and it'll still look great.

You could get by without a norm but it will make it better and like smr said you'd be best to re topo it. If you don't you'll get weird artefacts (shading) issues. Plus it'll be hard to unwrap

I realize its not the same, I just gave him that number for reference. They are also different because I knew there would usually be 10+ of them on a track since this would be a one off object (meaning one per track) it can be a little heavier IMO. That said, the only reason it is so heavy is because of the tires, there are a ton of them and they take up over 1/2 of the total poly count.

Anyways.

What I would do is retopo over the top, put some sick materials on the high poly one and bake it down.

But yea 5k should be no problem.

I've lost my mouse so I'm doing this all with the touch pad. It's a bit frustrating! I had a look at that retopo stuff and it seems like it'd be a LOT of work, for me anyway. I've found out about edge loop and am starting to go all around the heli and combine a lot of the faces. It seems to work well, although I'm sure it's probably the slower way or something.
