Back when I started making an Arai, I used a sphere as a base and went from there, it worked quite good since the back of the helmet is quite round.
However, I never finished it, I raged every time I came across a problem

I had the previous version of that helmet, I wasn't really impressed, the fit was very bad and it felt quite weird.
It wasn't any as good as a Shoei, 6D or a Bell.

Mx985 looks like a solid start! If you show the topology (wireframe) it's easier to critic and really see what is going on. If that is what you are looking for I should say..

With my v4 that I ended up abandoning ship on, I started off with a single plain and just worked the hell out of the shape. Took me for ever and I will probably never do it again.

I think with a helmet you are better off doing high poly first, and then re-topo it for the low poly. You'll get better bakes, less poly's, and more detail. The problem is the helmet changes so drastically once you start turbo smooth that it's very easy to get something off for the bakes. If you do the detailed high poly first and work off it, your low poly with be much more accurate to the surface.

hahah thanks guys, yeah i basically get the shape down then retopology quite a bit, after that move verts, where they need to be. re align the helmet to a front view. so i can get both the front, and sides the correct dimensions.its all a process really of just knowing how to shape it well, then making sure the topology is good, cleaning it up fixing over and over again for me at least. i just took the time to learn, i really wanted to so i did. the hardest part for me is finding good ref pics angel wise etc...i am no pro in modeling by far, so this is how my process go's. i find i have more fun making shit for the game then playing lol, but i always enjoy'd creating things, always been heavy into art and such i guess that helps. its like drawing a picture in 3d. this explanation was ment for john who asked what i do.

i need to retopologise on the model some more.like i said early stages i canned the bell helmet 5 times before i was happy with out the out come.

thanks m121c, yeah thats what i do i make the high poly first, or a sort of mid ground model you could say?... then i retopo to make it lower wich i took days on end cutting out edge loops on my bell model lol that process is realllllll fun.

that looks really nice. However I feel it needs to be made a little skinnier, as at the moment it looks too wide, from the front and top angles

i think its just the user perspective in blender, it tends to look a little thicker in ortho, here is a pic in user, wich looks a little thinner i think. since you can really only match it to pics in ortho view, makes it confusing sometimes to me at least on size and width.
