First, make sure that your details are clear and sharp.
More depth to the shadows and way more highlights. Add some very smooth and wide shadows and then go sharper towards the corners as you can see under the green arrow for example. Don't be afraid of using full black color, just play with layer opacity after that. Same goes with highlights. First make some wide and smooth highlights like the one under the red mark, then add some sharper for the edges like the green arrow shows, use more white on them. Try to avoid whitewashing, even though it's good in some places to show some really sharp and small edges and sometimes it just makes metals look more realistic. But too much is too much.
This is my style to do it. All you see in the pic are just softer and sharper shadows and highlights.

I think I've got the pants down. Thanks to everyone who helped me out yesterday, and vortexracingleader for giving me your normal map settings the other night, they made a huge difference
