Mechanical Engineer here too - BS from University of Iowa in 2003.

I think people who have the personality of mechanical engineers are attracted to dirt bikes.

or people who like dirt bikes, and working on them, are attracted to mechanical engineering.

Basically, if you are really interested in how things work, you might be an engineer at heart.

Agreed. I've been riding and racing since I was 5 and now I'm studying to be a mechanical engineer and I love it.

I want to do mechanical engineering out of school (currently in year 11) but i don't know what they actually DO!... anyone shed some light for me

Engineers design the future. We do anything from manage assembly lines to designing the complex robots that run them. Really, there are a lot of options in engineering.

Mechanical engineering in particular is extremely broad.

I design heating, cooling, and ventilation systems for buildings and pluming systems for buildings.

Mechanical engineers also: design dirtbikes, design dirtbike parts, design protective gear, design cars, mmmmmm well pretty much anything that is built has a mechanical engineer behind the scenes doing something. There is also the manufacturing side - just working to create and improve the process of building something.

Oh so thats whats mechanical engineering is. I never knew. Im chose the car line for my school, its actually fun. Mon -Wed Im in a workshop. And then got my theory classes Thur and Fri
