Multiplayer wont work

About a month ago, I had to reset my computer because of a virus. I re-installed MXS, and Have re-entered my Reg-key, but whenever I go to play online, It says "contacting server" for about a second, and then my screen goes black with only my cursor on it. Im not sure WHY this is happening NOW instead of before, but Id kind of like to play some pala online :/ Oh and I also tried connecting to multiple servers through the server list on the website, did the exact same thing.

Is a firewall or virus scanner stopping it? It works in single player right?

Yes single player works fine. I played Online before, But that was with my other anti virus. But I still had that antivirus when it started acting up. Im using AVG free right now. ALso, when I try opening task manager when its blacked out, it does nothing. What can I do to unblock Multiplayer from AVG free?

Have you tried disabling the antivirus software entirely?

Yes I have. it still doesent work.

When you reset the computer was it a complete reformat and reinstall? Perhaps there's a driver you forgot to reinstall.

I reset it back to factory. Which means it deleted everything from the HDD and then re installed the things that came from factory. Before I reset, it had started to do the same thing.

You would think it would work if it's running the exact same software that worked before. Are you sure the virus didn't infect the boot sector too? If it isn't that the only explanation I could come up with would be a hardware problem, but I really doubt that.
