This is a good resource to use too: http://www.pcityourself.com/choosing/introduction.php.
If you really want to freak yourself out, try to lap your CPU. I was terrified

Surely there are better ways to scare yourself than to ruin a $100 part lolyzmxer608 wrote:This is a good resource to use too: http://www.pcityourself.com/choosing/introduction.php.

There are much cheaper options than an i5, just so ya know. I really, really hope no one feels the need to lap an i5.Ballsfalsky wrote:Thats quite a bit more than 100$....

Re: Whats your pc?
The author of that article sounds like an atheist arguing against religion.
Using absurdly skewed logic and completely unsupported data
The miraculous advantages of lapping are evangelized by the same sort of online loonies who believe that Microsoft and AOL are giving away merchandise and cash just for forwarding an email message, three triangulated cell phones can pop popcorn kernels, and that Barack Obama was sworn into his Senatorial office with his hand on the Koran.
If you are ever tempted to lap your CPU do this instead: stand on polyester carpeting with your socks while you press your CPU onto the 3500 rpm spinning gray 60 grit wheel of a nice Black & Decker BT3500 bench grinder. Keep going until the static tingle in your fingers turns into sharp shocks and the IHS is ground down to where the actual circuitry is visible. Now your CPU will work perfectly. If you'll believe that, you'll also believe that Microsoft Bob was the best Operating System in history, Enron stock was a profitable investment, and Hancock was a great superhero movie.

Re: Whats your pc?
That guy doesn't like it I guess
.
I didn't wet sand mine, but it's probably better to so the shavings don't float around. But no, you obviously don't use a grinder, you don't put any pressure on the CPU at all when you do it either (just move it back and forth and let the weight of the processor itself do the work). Are the temperature benefits worth it? Not really no, maybe a few degrees.
The photo he has is very early in the process when you're still using low grit paper, when you get farther you get up to 2000 or higher grit to get the mirror finish. You can obviously see it wasn't flat, the middle was higher than the edges.

Re: Whats your pc?
Please tell me you did it to an older CPU and not to a brand new one.

Re: Whats your pc?
It wasn't brand new. I had it for about a year when I did it. It's still working fine so I didn't screw it up
