Making ruts in the editor

Post by rafagas »

Well, some people have been asking how I make ruts and I got tired of writing always the same so here's the method that Haggqvist taught me.

First of all, I want to mention that the values might change depending on what kind of dirt you use. Take your time trying different values and methods until you find something that you like.

Ok, so let's start:

1. Zoom in until you can see the whole corner

2. Raise tool:

-Strength around -2.25
-Focus: 0
-Actual radius around 2.5 ft

Paint the rut few times until you get the height that you want. NEVER start and finish the rut you are painting at the same point. If you do that, it is not going to look clean and will be hard to ride.

3. Lower tool:

-Strength around -3.50
-Focus: 0
-Actual radius slightly bigger than before. 3.5 ft works for me but it depends on what kind of traction you have. If it is a sand track you will need a bigger radius than if it is hard pack.

Paint the inside of the rut two or three times WITHOUT touching the top of it

4. Smooth tool:

-Strength around 0.00
-Focus: 0
-Actual radius bigger than what you used when lowering the inside. (4.5ft maybe)

Smooth the inside carefully to avoid any bumpiness trying not to touch the face of the rut. After that, smooth the outside of the rut with strength of ~1.00 without smoothing the top of the rut.

5. Raise tool:

-Strength of -3.00
-Focus: 0
-Actual radius around 1.5ft ( small radius to cover only the top of the rut)

Paint the top of the rut only once to finish your rut.

Voilà! Your rut should be finished.

I may do a short video making ruts/bumps when I have to add them to my next track. Sorry but this is not going to happen anytime soon since I'm really busy this month.

I was literally just bored in the editor trying to figure out how to do these. For jumps do you find the height you want then smooth it out enough you have a face or do you find the height you want and create some smaller heights next to it with more of a layered effect and smooth out the layers?

Use gradients for that stuff! It is way easier, faster and precise. I mean, you can build them with the raise/smooth tools too but I don't really see the point of doing that for "normal" jumps. I only use raise/smooth for obstacles with different heights like a big bump on the inside of a corner or something like that. But if you want to try it, use that layered effect and smooth it out later.
