Creating Tracks in Photoshop Tutorial

Postby vortexracingleader » Wed Jun 11, 2014 11:17 pm

I have decided the sit down and attempt to make a tutorial on how to make tracks in photoshop.. i am not as good as checkerz is but i know my way around
THIS IS A MUST
Image
Always use 16 bit Grey scale when making tracks in photoshop or you would get these rigid lines on your track and will just ruin it..
map sizes are 1025 x 1025, 2048 x 2048, 4096 x 4096
Then i usually make the the background a darker grey but not black nor white that way you can have elevation with your jumps
Image
So now you can start planning on how you want your track to be... layout wise, terrain , and all that
Always on your tracks have a Complete Black and complete White dot on your map.. this helps with keeping your terrain HF file the same and not change values when you import some heightmaps
Image
They dont need to be big just enough to see on your map ( in the pic they are 6 pixels wide)
Go Ahead and make a new layer and get your colors to be black and white, then make a square and fill it in with a color of your choice
then open up your blending options and select gradient overlay and choose black to white
Image
Remember the way the white is facing.. that is the way the jump is if that makes sense lol, then what i do is make a new layer and merge that with the gradient layer so the blending options thing goes away on the layer
then do ctrl + M to open up the curves menu..
go ahead and make a jump face with the dots like this
Image
After you do that go ahead and hit okay and set the blending options to screen
Image
i then Gaussian blur the layer with the strength of 2... repeat that process so you get a backside ( just duplicate layers if you want them to be bigger etc)
Image
Now we can start on getting a corner made
go ahead and get the pen tool and your colors black and white.. then click the start and end of your pen tool so its like this
Image
then hold the 2nd one and get the shape then press alt and click the last point..
Image
then complete it doing the same way you made it.. you should get a shape like this
Image
..now fill it with white and go into warp mode then edit it up to fit the corner you want then gaussian blur and lower the opacity.. you do the same thing as a rutt but ctrl j the rutt layer and fill it with black then merge the white and black and blur it with like 2
Image
That is pretty much the basics tho.. any questions just post here or pm me

Right click the rutt shape with the pen tool and do fill :)

in filter, blur, Gaussian blur... is where its at...
i blur them by putting merging the black and white rut then just blur that layer

Alright Time to do a little addon to the tutorial,i was asked how to do scaling/change it up and how to do terrain like hills and all that..
1. you want to get your 2048x2048 , Grey Scale ,16 Bit document open with a dark grey color as your background, and your 2 pure black, white, dots. choose the lasso tool, i like to have my feather on 10px, and draw a hill then go ahead and fill it with pure white.
Image
Now i decide if i want like rolling hills or ones with step inclines ( i usually just dig in the ground when i want step hills.. ill talk about that later on) for hills that are more rounded.. Gaussian blur that layer with something like 50 or 75 you should see the effect it gives then just lower the opacity (sorry about the Gaussian blur preview box, gyazo didn't capture it :(
Image
alright now to show you some examples ill do a step up that sort of goes into the hill..
so 1st step is creating the this would be to have your hill and thing on how your gonna have your jumps.. in my case its a booter to a step up hip double thing to a left hand, then a stepdown...
so once you get your double and then think how deep and how inclined do i want the face.. once you do that.. go ahead and select the path your want to have "indented" into the hill..
Image
Gaussian blur it about from 5 - 8 strength again it depends on how sharp / unsharp you want it to be then just mess with the opacity to what you want the incline and all that.
Image
Now making jumps on a incline is alot easier then you might think basically get the face you want once you have that just set it to screen mode and you have your stepup up face. just make sure the layer is above the dip in part and mess with opacity, down hills are pretty much the same thing as doing steup ups just reversed and with down hills just do what you do for a step up also, it all just takes practice.

too lazy to write about scaling but eXL'Mo0seY made a great explanation on what it all means...

I feel like your track sizes are wrong.
1025 is correct but as I remember its power of 2 plus 1. So [(2^x)+1]
Example [(2^10)+1]=1025 or [(2^11)+1]=2049.
I wouldn't recommend you differ from those two unless you were perhaps doing something small like an Arenacross or Endurocross and only required a small amount of detail meaning you could use a 513 map.

Dont forget to blur ruts/small corners or your going to be riding on a jagged edge and the back tire will be bouncing. P.s im @'ing you Barrington......
