I didn't see any posts about this, but close call for Cody...

Just wanted to give an update on our friend 374 after his crash tonight in the StL. Little bit of change of news after xrays. Cody has a non displaced fracture of c3 and c7 in his neck. The non displacement is the good news because there's no floating pieces. He still has all his movement and is in good spirits considering. He may or may not need surgery doctor said. Neck brace could possibly be all he needs but they can't be certain til they know more. The kid is natural born fighter and obviously could be much, much worse but feel to throw out some positive thoughts thru out the weekend.

Yea, scary deal. Good news based on how bad it could've been. Cody's back home and seeing a specialist out in CA this week. Unfortunately, I think STL 2017 was most likely the last professional SX race for the journeyman privateer.

He went down off the start (before the first turn) and got ran over. Big pile up, I think the red flag was thrown almost immediately

With all of today's safety innovations, the back of the neck is vulnerable. Marco Simoncelli was killed in a MotoGP race when the back of his neck was struck by a front tire. That was a much higher speed difference than Gilmore got hit with, luckily. It's like the vulnerability that was between the mask and chest protector of a catcher. They eventually put that dangling shield on after some guy got a piece of shattered bat in his throat. Too bad it would be a cumbersome deal having protection for back of the neck. It's amazing that SX has gone fatality free in the mainstream. Knock on wood.

Supercross/Motocross is dangerous, and technology can only protect you so much. It's a bummer deal that injuries can put a sour taste in your mouth in this sport, but its the risk we take watching it and its what makes watching these guys so mesmerizing because the risk is so high.

There was a third death in professional flat track in the past 6 months last weekend. Is that acceptable? Does that make flat track seem more exciting to you? Are you going to start watching all the races religiously hoping to see another rider get killed?

Please tell me more about how we shouldn't move safety in motorcycling forward.

One word....cool. Who wants to look all gay when they could be all dope, untucked and flying free. Dale Earnhardt wouldn't wear a Hans device yet he was killed by what that would have protected him from. When you don't want to be seen as a pussy, it's hard to be protected properly. From what I hear, whether you wear it inside or outside of your jersey, chest protectors just ain't pimpin'. How do you make it fashionable enough for those that would otherwise shun safety?

The only thing I said was that safety technology can only save you so much. We're humans, crashing at 40mph then being ran over by a 220 lbs motorcycle is going to fuck you up no matter what you wear.

P.S. I just heard about Reed's $3000 fine and 5 point penalty. Appropriate. When he decides he wants to be a dick, he goes all in.

You make a good point, just from a design perspective, what do you do though?

Exoskeleton that protects the vertebrates/spine yet allows free movement of the neck maybe? I don't think I want anything around my neck that could potentially impale me or cause a pressure point. And Without free movement, you essentially make your self a lawn dart and risk head injury/compression shattering of vertebrates.

I think neck braces are a good idea if you can wear them (Atlas is ahead of the game), however the restricted movement and the fact it literally is wrapped around your neck can be sometimes worse than not wearing one at all. In anything inherently dangerous there is so many variables.

I agree though with you position on safety vs. cool. I can not believe the amount of pros and younger kids not wearing chest protectors. Compression is the new look and no one wants something under there jersey at the least and that's ridiculous. I would be afraid of a clutch lever in the ribs or something.

its honestly ridiculous the amount of riders that dont wear protection, I mean it doesnt help with these compression fit jerseys to make you look "RAD".
The only other excuse these people have is it feels restrictive, ive ridden with and without an armour and neckbrace, and as long as you get the correct stuff for you, you can hardly feel it, and as shown in this vid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oWCyasbQPw) you can modify it to make it better too. surely team owners and sponsors would prefer their guys to carry on the season than be missing races in a hospital bed because they are above wearing safety gear.

I guess I didn't consider the amount of "unintended" protection a neck brace provides in a case like Cody's. I wonder if he was wearing one, if the injury was from impact or bending of his neck and if he would've been protected by a brace if he didn't have one. I also just saw DCreedz post about Reed's fine and I misprinted the amount.
