Basic Riding Technique?
Basic Riding Technique?
I've been playing MX Sim for quite a bit over the last few weeks, to the point I can hold my own around a national track for a few laps without crashing. Not fast at all, but still decently consistent.
Looking for a little advise on basic technique, I've been watching lots of videos of guys riding on youtube, but its tough to tell much from just that. My stability is 15 with most of the stock settings, and I found a suspension setup somewhere that I really like.
Corners - Do I stand up or sit down? I was sitting down for a while, but I watched some videos and it appears that a lot of guys stand up and lean forward in all the corners. I've been trying that and it works really well, but I'm still not sure if I am doing it properly. In big sweeping flat corners its way better to stand up I find but I keep eating it in ruts.
Jumps - Getting a lot better at this. Do I need to lean back at the top of every jump? I notice I ride front-end-low if I don't
Sitting/Standing - Touched on this a bit with the corners, but IRL I try to stand up into the corners until the middle of the corner and then sit down/foot out and accelerate. Is it good to sit down everywhere except bumps/jumps or is it better to stand up everywhere except corners?
Leg out - ??? Can't figure this one out, should I go slow enough to see it in most corners? I have the max dab speed at 20.
Thanks guys, happy new year!

Re: Basic Riding Technique?
Corners - i think about it as in real life. Like you said, i stand up going into the corner, then sit down once im halfway or about to hit the throttle and lean forward. For flat corners, theres different techniques/ways you can do them. I just sit down and pin it haha. For ruts, i just stand up going into them then sit down when im like halfway or about to pin it and lean forward!
Jumps - it sometimes depends on the jump and your setup. Theres certain jumps where you dont have to lean back right before you take off but i always lean back just to be safe. With the setup part, your back suspension could be soft so itll tend to bottom out at the face then you endo. Timing of your leaning could be another problem too if you endo.
Sitting/Standing - i just think of it as real life. Sit down when you need to and stand up when you need to.
Leg out - max dab speed is what makes your leg stick out in corners. The lower your max dab speed is, the less your leg will stick out, and you will get more traction but stiffer leaning from left to right. I run 15 personally because i like hard leaning. And vice versa, the higher the max dab speed is, the more your leg will stick out and you can have a higher chance of sliding out in corners but then you get leg swag when you whip
its all preference!
Hope this helps man!

Re: Basic Riding Technique?
Thanks Jason! I tried the things you said (sitting down, suspension setup for jumps ect) and it sure helped. Sitting down more helped me more in the exit of the turn and not over correcting as much. I'll keep practicing and post when I have anymore issues!

(Sorry for double post) Can't find edit button??
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu2h20WAGDA with a guy like this, is he sitting down in the corners? It doesn't look like it to me, but I can't figure it out.

Sit and lean back as much as possible. Use rear brake first.

Re: Basic Riding Technique?
The reason you cant tell if they are sitting or not is because they barley sit down, in the corners and possibly in a slow section that is about it, the reason for that is you can actually lean farther when standing up and ive been told you get better traction, as far as use the back break first, i dont know about that mine is there kind of as a backup incase my front cant stop me in time.

I stand and lean back as much as possible, I have both brakes set to the same button, as for everything else, I'd try to find a feel for everything myself.

Tips in red. I do apologize if some of this is way too basic for you, but I just wanted to be sure.rf928 wrote:I've been playing MX Sim for quite a bit over the last few weeks, to the point I can hold my own around a national track for a few laps without crashing. You should probably find new "Advanced Stability Settings" at this point. The general "Stability" slider resets these values, so once you've made changes to your advanced stability settings you don't want to touch the basic "Stability" slider anymore. Save your setups by typing /writesetup "name" and recall it later if you make changes you don't like by using /readsetup "name" (no quotes)

The folks above me have talked about this already, but a general rule of thumb I suggest: if you aren't sure, stand up. You're always better off standing at the wrong time than sitting at the wrong time.
Jumps - Getting a lot better at this. Do I need to lean back at the top of every jump? I notice I ride front-end-low if I don't
It depends on the jump itself and your current situation, but no you will not need to lean back on every jump. I rekcon most of your "endo" situations (front-end-low) are caused by your throttle - or specifically a lack thereof - and weight transfers from deceleration more than how you're leaning. Try using a higher gear over jumps that are sending you over the bars, or hitting them at a higher rpm (more throttle). When you let off the gas, a number of factors cause you to slow down quite rapidly. When you slow down rapidly, your weight moves forward and when this happens on the face of the jump it cause your front end to dive.
Another remedy once you're ALREADY IN THE AIR (caps for emphasis) is to gas it mid-flight. It's called panic rev, but it also auto-magically "raises" your front end. It more or less stops the front end from diving so horribly, so the sooner in the air you do this the more effective it is.
Sitting/Standing - Touched on this a bit with the corners, but IRL I try to stand up into the corners until the middle of the corner and then sit down/foot out and accelerate. Is it good to sit down everywhere except bumps/jumps or is it better to stand up everywhere except corners?
See above. Sitting down depends on the situation, and is certainly useful, but better to be caught standing up.
Leg out - ??? Can't figure this one out, should I go slow enough to see it in most corners? I have the max dab speed at 20.
Keep the max dab speed where it is, and completely forget about this. You should not adjust your riding to see this happen.
Thanks guys, happy new year!
You too bud, let us know if you need more pointers and the more specific you are the better. Good luck!
Re: Basic Riding Technique?
All i can recommend is working on your setup man. I played this game for months without really knowing what was going on and what was up with settings. i played it like any other video game, i turned it on and started playing haha. Play around with different settings, once you find YOUR setup you will be blown away. Finding a setup that works with your play style and all will change the game for you. and keep in mind that nobodys setep should really be the same. dont get stuck thinking "this guy is fast, his setup is what i need" use other peoples setups as a guide and then tweak things to your preference. Good luck man

On the contrary, if you have a setup that bottoms on takeoffs and landings then you need more spring rate and compression damping. I tried one of the fast guys setups and it made a huge difference because it was real firm. I did tweak it for my style tho.

Re: Basic Riding Technique?
Thats what im saying. You probably should use one of the fast guys setups as a template and go from there. it takes a lot of playing with and testing and trial and error to find the setup that works for you but once you find it it makes it like a whole new game. once you dial YOUR setup in you will be golden.TeamHavocRacing wrote:On the contrary, if you have a setup that bottoms on takeoffs and landings then you need more spring rate and compression damping.
