Making my own private server

Hi guys, i would love for someone to help me out.

i want to know how to set up a server for myself and my mate. ive watched videos from 2-3 years ago, couldnt get it to work, ive read through the JLV guide and still cant get it to work so someone please contact me and tell me indepth?

If you've watched this and it's not working, you most likely have to port forward in your router in order to make it work.

yes i have watched that and yes i probably will have to, will it affect anything?

Port forwarding is essentially re-directing incoming traffic from your router to your PC. If this "path" isn't specified, the incoming traffic may end up in the wrong place, or not really end up anywhere since it "doesn't know" where it should go. Port-forwarding is in 9/10 cases what's wrong when people try to set up their own servers :)

so i probably just need to port forward then? ive pretty much done everything on the instructions.

Yes. Easiest is to goolge your router brand and model + port forward, some guide probably shows up. So google:
<brand> <model> port forward

If a model name similar to yours comes up, but not yours exactly, it can still work. If the interface (in the screenshots I assume they provide) looks like yours, you're probably good to go. You want to forward the port 19800 (it's the "default sim port") on the UDP protocol. After this, if it still doesn't work, add the mxserver.exe so it's allowed through your windows firewall.
