Controller doesnt work after playing with Steam

If I go to play GTA or some nonsense, then wanna jump on mx sim and mess around, my controller doesn't work. sill got power to it, but I have to restart my lappy to get it to control mx sim... any suggestions?

Its a common problem with gta someone asked this question awhile ago:

Yeah everyone that I know has the same problem. Easy fix is to go to your control panel > devices and printers > right click your controller > game controller settings > properties > under the "test" tab just click some buttons on your controller. Thats what I always did and it worked.
