[tutorial] How to do proper gear .saf

Hey guys,

since there is lots of creators making gears, and some of them still didn't figure out the right way to release them, I would like to show you a tutorial of a way I do it.
Hopefully it will help you to saf things properly and you will be not getting problems with missing models etc. This will also help you to make your packs as small as possible, so the game doesn't have to load 1 normal map several times!

this is how naming of gear work in MXS:

rider_body-modelname-skinname.png

first part is to know what is the model actually for, that riders body then there is a name of a model the gear should be displayed on, and last part is name of the skin itself. I believe you all know it, but just to make sure!

Premise:
your gear is done and it has one norm and spec map

Step 1:
Download SAF creator by wakestyle if you don't have it yet (http://forum.mxsimulator.com/viewtopic. ... 01&p=16059).
Read the instructions as well!
I'm not sure if it works on macs, so this tutorial is for those who make it working.

Step 2:
Download the model your gear is base on (eg. http://forum.mxsimulator.com/viewtopic. ... 77#p208977)

Step 3:
Create a folder somewhere.(name doesn't matter)
Now take the .jm files you want from the pack you downloaded and copy them to the new folder you made.
(there should be two files...regular model: rider_body-modelname.jm and for first person riding: rider_body_fp-modelname.jm)

Next thing is important to save useless copying of maps:
Rename the jms to what ever name your gear has! (my case: rider_body-2013 Thor Flux.jm)
you should have something like this with your name of course:
Image

Copy one norm and one spec map from your gear to the folder and name it as it should be named:(my case: rider_body-2013 Thor Flux_norm.png, rider_body-2013 Thor Flux_spec.png)
you don't need to have it for each color version of the gear!
pic of what we have now:
Image
Alright now, just copy each version of the gear you have into this folder and name them properly.(my case: rider_body-2013 Thor Flux-Circuit Red.png, etc.)
pic:

We are done with preparing, now just make a saf of it!

Step 4:
Start Saf creator and select the folder you have everything prepared in.
also select where you saf will be safed.
and the most important part.
Check the: Strip selected folder from path! if you don't do this, normal mad specular maps will not work!
Image

Now hit create button, and you have your saf. Put it in personal folder (directly, no subfolder)
check how it works, pack it, upload and share with others!

Different norm/spec?:
if some of the variants has special normal/spec man you can split the gear into two/three/etc. and name the jms different.
In this case you will have jms named:
rider_body(_fp)-2013 Thor Flux Circuit.jm
norm/spec:
rider_body-2013 Thor Flux Circuit_norm.png
rider_body-2013 Thor Flux Circuit_spec.png
and skins will be:
rider_body-2013 Thor Flux Circuit-Red.png
rider_body-2013 Thor Flux Circuit-Blue.png

then the other set will be:
rider_body(_fp)-2013 Thor Flux Fiber.jm
norm/spec:
rider_body-2013 Thor Flux Fiber_norm.png
rider_body-2013 Thor Flux Fiber_spec.png
skins:
rider_body-2013 Thor Flux Fiber-Red.png
rider_body-2013 Thor Flux Fiber-Blue.png

if it's just one set, then it's useless to make new jms, you can just add norm/spec map to the skin directly...eg. rider_body-2013 Thor Flux-Circuit Red_norm.png

...........................................

Hope this helps somebody, I know it's pretty basic stuff, but I see lots of released with 10 normal maps that are all the same, just because the created don't know how to saf it properly!

Thanks for your time and ask if you don't understand something ;)

Have a nice day,
p2sta

P.S. It is not necessary to SAF it, it will work with jms and pngs only as well, but it has to be named as shown in here and placed directly in personal folder not in any folder!

How can you make the file smaller? I put the .jms and norms in and 4 sets of gear and the file was over 200 mb

if all the maps and textures are saved as png it shouldn't have more than 15MB...you are safing a psd or some other stuff if you end up with 200mb+ pack
