3D scanning

Post by saetta »

i just found this on youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjosgepaGbQ

I don`t know if this works but maybe someone here knows a bit more about 3D scanning and how precise this is??
thought this could be a good way to maybe scan some helmets or neck braces and stuff like that
but it just seems way to easy to be real.. :D

Iracing uses scanning technology. You can pay for it though

3d scanners tend to use a lot of polygons. If you used a scanner you'd still want to manually retopo the mesh for the sake of efficiency.

LuizH posted something simillar to the mxs twitter thread, a free Autodesk soft, which can build 3d object from a bunch of photos...

I'm not sure how accurate it is and how big things it can "recreate"...but it will be pretty great to use it as a 3d blueprint for your model, anyway somebody needs to actually try it and see how it works...it's far from a real 3d scanning

That's what meshlab is for. 8)

actually i don`t really know if this kind of 3D scanning would work with bigger objekts, since the chequered sheet of paper is only A4 format and i don`t know if it would still work if you changed the size of the paper.. ?

imo it should work...because the paper just work as a guild for the application, so it knows how is the scene rotated...if you print it on a A1 it should be ok too..but I'm not sure how it will work because bigger objects mean camera has to be more far from the object..so imo it will start to lose details...but still it can show you the size of the objects, so if you are going to scan a helmet with it..you will have some basic shape with real life texture on it..so you can follow it with your actual model

From what I've heard even in Engineering where a ton of polygons are wanted, is that a 3d scan is really just a base to start with. Still have to go in and put the finishing touches on everything.
