I don't know if there is a list out there or something but what are you planning on doing to the game next JLV?

Haven't been working on the game much. I had been putting off some real world stuff during the SX season and I'm still catching up. The only change I've made to the game so far is to enable texture compression. It doesn't work well on textures with lettering, which we have lots of, so I'm going to make it only compress if the texture has a png comment requesting it.

The next big thing will be terrain shaders.

have you put thought into terrain deformation? i know it has been asked before and it is a tough thing to do and i understand that as well. im just wondering where that falls on your list of To-Do things.

Definitely thinking about it and how it will fit in. Live updates are tough though. To get decent speed you have to cache a lot of information and changing things around invalidates the cached info.

would it just make is tougher for the less fortunate computers to play this game? in other words would sucky computers lag more? i believe it would be cool for 250's to race a national and on restart save the track deformation and for the 450 race the deformation would still be there on the track. The track would wear down and down every moto.

It will definitely hurt the framerate.

I'm not sure terrain deformation is feasible for multiplayer in this game. If the server has to calculate the deformation, then that will result in massive bandwidth usage. If the client calculates it, then people will end up with different tracks because of lag. Not to mention it can get laggy enough as it is.

Better terrain deformation for track development would be cool though

if money werent an option JLV,
could something be done to make the game run better on crappier computers?

and besides that, if money still werent an option, what would/could be the next BIG thing to hit MXsim?

Just to show how big this will be, here is an example using a model (hence the highly repeated texture)

I could live with that. It would still make racing more interesting.
Any idea how terrain deformation was implemented in alive or reflex for multiplayer?

Take you time jlv, I'm sure it has to be really hard for a single person to do so much things and knowing there is still tons of stuff that would be cool to add!

imo MvA only changes normal maps on the track, it doesn't affect the terrain itself (just my opinion not sure about that)

and I agree with DJ, not sure deformable terrain will be good for multiplayer, if we will get terrain shaders, then online you can get the effect like Mva has, only normal map will change...so you will see lines etc, but the terrain will stay same. Anyway for offline it would be good to have it, for track developing at least.

anyway hope to see reflection based on spec map in the future, since I'm not riding much I'm more into model/skin side of the game, this could help to make it a lot better looking :)

MvA has real terrain deformation, I'm sure about it in Reflex, when you ride on a sand track (can't remember the names) you defently get some very nice ruts in it. So it isn't only the normal map. But if the real terrain deformation isn't posible, it also would be cool with a normal map.

I guess it'd be ok for non serious applicatons. For organised races you probably wouldn't run it anyway.

They would have client side calculations. The bike physics aren't so sensitive in that game, so the deformation calculations could be 'rougher' I guess. The bike physics are probably less CPU intense than mxs anyway, so there's probably more CPU power to spare. Of course, I'm pulling most of this from my arse, so don't take my word for it
