Online Optimization...

Post by BrutalMX »

Okay, I know I'm probably asking a lot here but this has always baffled me. Why is it, that here at school if I play MXsim online with any more than 2 people, my ping is 500+; but if I were to play BF3 with 64 players its totally fine?! Why does sim seem to use so much bandwidth? Is there anyway around it?

Most shooters just send a position vector and a scalar orientation for the player. MX Sim needs to get everything right on the bike so it has to send more info, and since it can have arbitrary orientation it needs a full 4d vector for orientation instead of just a yaw angle. It does use scalars for the positions of stuff that's on a constrained path like the forks/swingarm/wheels, but it still comes out to more than just x,y,z,yaw like a FPS has. With that said, 2 people barely uses any bandwidth in MX Sim so you probably have a network problem there.

Ahh I see. Yeah, its a network problem when I'm sharing my bandwidth with the other 10,000 students on campus. I just figured there was to be some way to fix it. When doing speedtests I get about 10-15mbps down, and my ping is ususally under 100. When playing MXsim and a few players start rolling in, my ping just shoots up.

I dont think I could do 4 years here without racing a single race!

I'm not sure what's wrong. 10-15 mbps is more than enough bandwidth for a big race.
