Wanna start skinning but can't figure it out..

Hey guys, I am sure there are A LOT of people that ask this but here goes...

I wanna start skinning, mainly for me and friends but if I really like one I would consider releasing it, but that's FAR down the road. I'm not going to purchase a copy of Photoshop until I see if I enjoy the skin making process and feel that I am good enough to buy one, however, that may hinder my ability to skin to par, but it's cool. So my question is there anything that you guys could refer me to to help me with this (and I have seen basically all the tutorials for gimp that I could find)? Thanks!

Basically I don't know how to use gimp. Like I said I don't intend on making skins for the public, so they don't have to be very good. I just need to know what tools I need to use and what they do and what they are used for. So, yeah, I need to learn how to use gimp, obviously I could play around with it and learn it that way but I still wouldn't understand. Yes, I'm a derp..

Haha, that's what I'm asking, I want to know how to use gimp and if there are any things you can tell me about on how to learn it?

It takes awhile to learn it.. You just have to mess around and make random stuff to get used to all the tools. It took me a couple months to get Photoshop down and figure out how to get the program to do what I need it to do. Good luck man.
