Normal map explanation

I would like to know about how the normal map works on the template and how to use them in game. I found a tutorial on YouTube but the way it is explained is confusing. Can anyone help.

Here's a pretty in-depth article on normal maps, mxs uses tangent space normal maps.

Keep in mind the green channel is inverted.

Well now i just figured out that for some reason the nvidia tools will not install on my computer
