I think I've logged close to 50-60 hours worth of riding using erode on a track I'm working on now. It's best to use a low value on the erode and ride more laps than to use higher value and less laps. the bike tends to just dig holes on high erode. I've used something like 0.09 or as little as 0.06 when making a track rough.

Oh and remember that the shading doesn't automatically update so you'll need to set the brush strength to 0 and zoom out far enough to cover the whole track and click your mouse to get the ruts to show.
old topic i know. but when i want to rut up a track i do it all in time trial. it will make some sweet ruts after a while. probably quicker than the way u are doing it. i usually get a decent lap and let the ghost go a buncha times. then do another decent that lap that is quicker than the other using different lines and then let that go for a while. and then some more quicker laps with different lines if u want. usualy works out pretty slick. works best on tracks with a high resolution displacement map.

I don't know if you guys know about it (it's probably written in an FAQ somewhere not sure) but --warp added to your target box makes the game run incredibly fast so if you are currently waiting a while for ghost or replays to run their laps try that. I don't know how useful it will be for this application though as it makes riding pretty much impossible.
