Press 'u' to update the back buffer. It doesn't do it automatically because you want to leave it out of sync sometimes.

Re: Help. Update Needed Problem.
is it possible to get too far ahead of the buffer? i have placed a gradient that i wanted and felt smooth, i updated the back buffer, then i went and tested it again. after the extra runs i decided to modify the landing. i used a new gradient to size just the landing, set to terrain, then modified it to my liking. now here is where i am at a halt; the linear paint doesnt modify the terrain, "update buffer" right so i hit U and still when i apply the paint nothing changes. now im not a total newb but, i am green and with so i ask this question. i have searched here and there for any kind of solution, just to find the update buffer through pressing u as the only solution. either i am doing it wrong or i am doing something else that is causing this.
thanks JLV for such a sweet game and as well taking your time

Re: Help. Update Needed Problem.
After you update the back buffer the track and the back buffer will be identical, so there shouldn't be anything unexpected happening due to that. Check the sub-mode. If you have it set to lower only or raise only it will prevent edits that raise or lower the terrain respectively.

ahah i did not even notice the raise only, lower... options. That makes fine detail fixes much less of a pain. Okay, now if done properly when i cut the gradient for the ruts it should be smoother. Not like a dragon back, correct? I do understand the smooth tool is generally a need in 90% of the formed gradients. I can do it sometimes which is why I'm pretty sure i got it; just going to make sure. Every now and again I get that issue with the choppy lift.

Re: Help. Update Needed Problem.
This might be the problem of having a "too bad resolution". In your terrain.hf file, the first value is most likely 9 or 10, the 2nd one is probably 1.000000 or 2.000000. This 2nd value is how many ft 1px of the "terrain.png" file should represent. If you have 2.000000, that means that each pixel is 2ft in game, making it choppy since it can't read a new value until after 2 feet, while it'd be better if it could read it after only 1ft.SPEED763 wrote:ahah i did not even notice the raise only, lower... options. Just changing the value from 2.000000 to 1.000000 won't work, your track will come out 1/4 of the previous size. There's a few more things to do.

that's what i got for my scale. i do realize the smooth tool is something to live by. i just find it odd when most of the time i get the average turn out for the sculpting smoothness when first painted/added. Once in a while it goofs and makes the rut raise like the teeth on a sprocket. my curiosity is mainly whether i cause the sprocket outcome and if i could prevent. Usually i just delete, close out the game for awhile, then get back after it and nothing goes haywire. i can probably safely assume that would/does come from building to far into new changes without baking up the buffer.
