I wouldn't have my computer on carpet, thats a load of static electricity right there. Static you can't feel can fry chips, so that definitely isn't good if the pc is resting on a static gold mine. When the computer is running and the side panel is off, can you see that all of the fans are spinning and functional? It may be that your computer just needs to be cleaned up some (dust and file wise).

It's not a really high amount no, I wouldn't run two of those programs you listed at the same time. PS takes a lot of resources to run (especially when working on large documents). You should invest in more RAM, but make sure you get the exact same kind you have now. There should be a sticker on the RAM with the brand and type.
