The best way to make money off MXS is to just go JGR style and charge an entry fee for your team. I've been rolling in it for the past few years.

I just hate when I can't get things in the real world for free... I mean who do people think they are.Ddavis wrote:I remember when people would make graphics and gear for other teams for the fun of it, and then people started to say "I'll give you 10 bucks for that gear!" and the people making bikes and gear started thinking, "hey! I can make money at this?"... okay, pay me $50 for this gear. Now you're lucky to get ANYTHING made for free, even a simple pair of goggles or your name/number on a jersey.
I'm with Jordan on this one. (Not because I'm on his hit list either...)

Mason,
You know more about the skinning/modeling, so if you think that selling source files is the best way I can jive with that because I don't know that side of things that well.
How would you suggest doing it for tracks? I have a few random ideas...
Membership fee to participate in events.
- Anyone can download the tracks and race them, but for the event they would have to have paid to sign up.
- Nothing stops someone else from running an event with your tracks though, which will draw more people to the free event vs. the paid one.
Track purchases to UID
- I would love this one, but would require work on JLV's side (if even possible)
- Would allow anyone to play the tracks in single player, but to play them online you'd have to have purchased it. Basically offline becomes a "free demo".
I'm still either for all free or all paid content. The middle ground sucks.

Re: Buying MXSimulator products thoughts
Tracks would be a difficult one as the source files arent really imortant to people. Although you could offer like decal packs or something like that as source files people can buy for their tracks. For the track itself would be tough, i understand the amount of work in a track is alot same as a model or skin, but i would still like to see free tracks to support the community.
Now like series tracks like sx '15 where you are committed to making 17 tracks, i think it would be cool to have like a subscription account (like on rf) for the series, where once you pay the the fee to the series your account is allowed the track download and sign up for the race. Where and how the money is split would be up to those in charge.
As with any system you would need the right people in charge, respect from the community, and the pros and cons gone through thoroughly. Imo it would stop alot of immature racing.. Who wants to pay a $20 fee to race just to get banned and miss out on sick tracks?

Don't agree, why should we miss out on all the fun, I hate being the awkward guy at the party...m121c wrote:Tracks would be a difficult one as the source files arent really imortant to people. 20 fee to race sx sounds legit and for mx your gonna leave us out? If you charge 20 for mx pp your gonna get atleast 100 people so that 2g each track creator should get a hundred per round no ifs or buts and the rest (800) can go towards supporting the site and the rf crew do a awesome job so they can have it haha.m121c wrote:Now like series tracks like sx '15 where you are committed to making 17 tracks, i think it would be cool to have like a subscription account (like on rf) for the series, where once you pay the the fee to the series your account is allowed the track download and sign up for the race. This is a must! Two weeks after the conclusion of the series all tracks are released to everyone no ifs or buts and tracks are put in the 01 of servers.
I think this method is flawless NEARLY, yer we might get some track sharing to others who didn't pay but they can't race so who really cares. But the major problem I forsee is the people complaining about who has to pay and who doesn't due to being in the "cool" ts group or you chose his tracks cause he is in the "cool" ts group. But if we run the same people who did this year, barrington should share cause he can't pull that many rounds outa his arse again haha.
Oh contributors should pay the rf rate or gnarrrrr? Not quite sure on that.
Let's see it happen checkerz, sween, that other guy everyone loves and can't think of his name hahaha. Great for you great for us, great for community and most importantly THE TRACK CREATORS WILL BE RECOGNISED FOR OUR TRACKS.
I think sween is a rad dude for the job, level headed doesn't get a big ego and if he is getting payed to do them I believe he would make the effort to get back into it. Who run them this year? Sween or that other guy? Or someone I don't know hahahaha.m121c wrote:As with any system you would need the right people in charge, respect from the community, and the pros and cons gone through thoroughly. Re: Buying MXSimulator products thoughts
Well the thing is your not selling the track, you are more charging a fee for an entry to a series with new tracks. I still think you can get in trouble let's say if you have a the Glen Helen national and sell it, why would Glen Helen want you profiting (not that they would really know or care most likely) off of their name and track? It's a touchy thing right along with models.
With models you aren't buying the model, but the source files.
With tracks your not buying the track just the entry of a series which includes new tracks.
Unfortunately nothing in life is free, this community/game has thrived off of free content in the past but it was different then. It was a much tighter community (kinda like Mikeys TS size) and not just a bunch of random people expecting free templates and new models all the time, everyone was friends. Things have changed and the game has expanded. You start bringing in more professionalism I think when you start involving money. I really think it could help in areas that are at this moment, the worst in the community. Dirty racing and ripping are the two that come to my mind instantly. With this system what is there to rip when everything is available to you? Why be a immature little shit when you race if you are just gonna get banned, miss out on new tracks every week, and waste your $20 entry fee?
It's not a gold mine, it's not a get rich quick, it's just something to make things more legit imo. Not only will it help creators for their time and efforts, it will motivate more content, more series's, better racing, etc.

This stuff hurts my brain. Unless JLV wants to invest time into it, I'd rather just keep giving away content than cause and deal with drama, accusations, ripping, etc.
From my experience, the knowledge and relationships learned creating for "free" in a community is worth wayyy more than you'd ever make selling content for an MX game without a proper system in place. Of course, I'd always gladly accept donations.

How do your prevent one person from buying whatever you are selling and distributing it to everyone else they know? That right there is IMO the problem that would need to be overcome to be able to sell a track. I have always thought that RF should charge a "Entry Fee" for putting on the events and some of the money could go toward prizes and the rest to everyone that helped out. Personally with how much everyone complains now I am not really motivated to work on anything and unless it was decent money it probably wouldn't change my feelings on that.
Once money becomes involved the butthurt factor multiplies by 1000, I would expect issues to arise. The other side of this is that once people are paying for stuff they will feel like they can demand a higher standard for said stuff. Its different to make a track for fun and give it out, it can be what you want it to be. To make a track that people are paying for, you kinda have to make it what the majority of people want it to be.

You are right Chris. Without a proper system in place and moderated then it will never work correctly. Things will probably continue they way they are anyways and people will just do what they want with their stuff, but it was a pretty good discussion none the less.
SMR:
People buying and giving it out: I think this would definitely be a con, and something you couldn't possibly control. That is a situation where the creator has to ask him/her self if the ratio of bought to given out content is worth it. In my mind it work out fine enough where you could just ignore it.. ya it sucks for those who pay for it, but you will never be able to fully stop petty thieves and those people who do pay are just morally good people. Who would want to buy something and give it away for free is beyond me, they would be a fool.
High standard: I definitely see where you are coming from. The only thing is, it's a choice thing. They don't have to buy it, they don't have to signup for the series, if they don't like what you are offering they get a choice. You are the creator of it, you are the one putting in the time/effort, you do what you want with it in my mind. Of course you may want to try to please everyone but that is just not possible as seen with '13 vs '14 supercross tracks, so in my opinion, they can demand what they want but in the end it's what you want it to be and if they don't like it they don't have to pay for it.
It definitely has it's cons along with it's pros.
Could a system as described help fix all this? I don't know, but I think what is happening know is a mess and something will have to change. With that statement I leave you with this question: Who will fill in the major holes when/if the back bones of the community are done and over it all?

So true. Don't get me wrong this is not about making money, it's just something more legitimate imo. It still supports free content in the community (which I fully back), you just have to pay to get the extra bit like source files, organized races, etc. People need to understand although this is just a video game, these extra bits take a lot of time, effort, and even money to do.SMR 510RR wrote: Personally with how much everyone complains now I am not really motivated to work on anything and unless it was decent money it probably wouldn't change my feelings on that.

Re: Buying MXSimulator products thoughts
IDK, in the time since I purchased MXS almost 3 years ago there have been a number of people that came and went. During that time a few of the OG's were on the way out (guys like DJ and P2sta for example) and other people stepped in to fill the void. I don't think anything would be different if you or I or Checkerz or Barrington or even Korey stepped away. It is kind of strange though, the community has grown a lot since I bought the game and the amount of people making stuff has really not changed that much. It doesn't seem proportional to the amount of new members.m121c wrote:Could a system as described help fix all this? I don't mind the charging for a series "system" but of course it leaves one group of people with all the power (whoever is hosting the series I guess) vs. you being a independent contractor of sorts making stuff you want to make and selling source files as you see fit.
I do agree tho, the community has become a big mess lately. Personally I would like to see a lot of people come together to create tracks vs. small groups working independently. For one it would spread the workload between more people so that each person has less to do. Secondly it would feel more like the community made the tracks instead of a handful of guys busting their hump to put out a whole series. I feel like we have sort of reached the full potential of the engine as demonstrated by all the hate coming from the players with low budget non gaming systems. That I think it really killing everyones mojo in a way because if I can't make something that looks better than last year then I don't really see the point in making it.
It will be interesting to see if MvA will do a SX series like they have hinted to in some of the interviews I have seen. I just want to see if they can actually pull it off and see what kind of pricing model they would use, would it be the whole season as one pack or what?
