I never thought I'd have to ask myself this but my 05 Crf250 motor blew(2nd time something major wrong in 5 months, last fix cost 700)The owner of the shop is saying it's about 2500 for a new one. Which is practically the cost of the whole bike. Now I'm not sure what to do. I know I can't afford a new one. I'm not sure if I should either get a new engine(if i can even afford that), get a different 4 stroke around the price of 2500 or less, or get a 125.Or any other options if there is any. Basically what I'd like is to have a reliable bike that is easy to maintain as I just started learning how to take care of my bike and I don't have the most resources. Also which will save my money the most. The only problem with the 125 for me is that I don't want to feel slower, and I used to have a problem keeping my 85 straight in the air. Anyways, any input would be helpful as I'm really not sure what to do and I'm no genius when it comes to bikes. Sucks not having much to work with =/ So yeah, there's what I'm looking for, please let me know which you think would be best. Thanks.

what shop is telling you that and what exactly broke ? did you seize it ? etc. Who fixed it ? need more info and ill point you in the right direction in town, or at least the right people.

If you're worried about power why not get the 250 2t? It's not going to be uncontrollable by any means. Or even the KTM150.

To me, for someone in your situation, the two stroke seems like a no brainer.

Well I never got all the info cause it was my grandma who got the call (she overgeneralizes alot) and she said he said the whole engine blew and it would be 1600 for a used or 2500 for a new one. We took it to Westy Motorsports, my dad used to be best friends with the owner but he's in TX now. But yeah we took it to them to fix it last time it siezed like 5 months ago or less and it ran perfectly fine and just randomly siezed.

The KTM150 would probably be a good bike power wise, but the pre-2010 ones had some engine problems, so keep that in mind.

I'd recommend a YZ250. You can find plenty of cheap second hand ones in good condition. They are also extremely easy to maintain and very durable. Just change the oil every few rides and the filter every 1 or 2 rides and you'll be sweet. If your a bit competitive you may wanna do the top end once or twice a year but then again thats easy and not expensive.

you need to have it looked at by someone specific and get details western WILL do that and charge you for stuff you DO NOT NEED. you prob just blew something up or cracked something but im sure you didnt grenade it 100%

Regardless, any post-2000 250 2-stroke are great bikes. One thing about the YZ250 over all the other brands is the plethora of available parts on ebay and what not, should you need to replace something on the bike.

Rebuilding 2 strokes are cheap and easy. I spent 86$ on a total top end rebuild kit and did it myself (first time doing it on a yz250) in 2.5 hours with basic hand tools. If you need to replace the crank, its like 150-200$ for a crank kit, and like 50-100 more if you need to replace the crank bearings.

You will not "feel" slow on a 250 2-stroke by any means. In fact, you will probably "feel" faster.

if i where you i would take the hole bike strip it down and sell it in small increments. IF it goes well you could end up getting more for the bike like that, and then buy a 125 and as you get more money for the crf, you tune the 125 and become a MAD 125 rider!!

Like others are saying, get a 2-stroke (unless you can know for sure it'll be less that a $1,000 to fix your current bike)

I actually just replaced my blown up yz250f with a cr80 big wheel (pristine condition for 1,000$). Sooo much fun! I'm small and light enough that I can really go fast on it. On my tracks in the fields that are only turns, I am actually faster on it than my 250f. Absolutely smoked my brother on his 250f, and some very respectable riders on their big bikes. So, if you want to have a lot of fun, dust off your 85 (if you haven't sold it) or get a 125 or 250 2-stroke. We all know that 125's can go as fast as you will ever need it to, especially if you are not really big. Riding the 2-stroke will make you a better rider than the thumper diesel fart-factory.

That being said, I bought a like new 07 250f for $2,500. There is NO way that a motor could cost that much, even a crate motor.

1 question, Why the. do you have a 2005 crf!!!!? those where one of the first stroke bikes, and nuff said! i would NEVER recommend anyone to get a 05 4 stroke bike, if you aren't going to be in the 3 year old bike club then a 125 is your only option unless you like blowing motors up and having some "FUN!" problems whit the bike...

I decided I'll just go ahead and try to sell the thing as is for $1000 or less(Not sure how I would part it out as I don't know how much any of this would go for, and I don't even know which parts are broken or not lol). I've grown up taking my bike to his shop so I guess I can trust him. I picked the bike up today, was pretty sad seeing the entire engine and other parts in boxes. I did get a list of the parts that it would need to be fixed which was:Crankcase Comp. RI, Gasket. Crankase, Crankcase Comp.Le, Crankshaft, Piston, Ring set. Piston(STD) Pin. Piston, Clip Piston pin, Key, Rotor oil pump inner and outter, bearing radial ball, bearing, gasket cover left, filter engine oil, gasket cylinder, casket cylinder head, gasket. R cover.
The total for all those parts came out to be 1,198.73 plus labor and tax made it 1,640. But he had called my grandma saying it would be 2,500 total later on(not sure why). Not sure if this happens often, or why it did it as it gave no warning.

I got the bike back in 2008 after selling my 85. We couldn't afford anything newer.

I do think I would like to get a 01 or newer 2 stroke(RM or YZ)for around $2000 or less as I'm hoping it would save me money in the long run. Just spent $700 on fixing this bike 5 months or less ago, then this, I don't want that to keep happening...
