Riding&Training help&tips thread for beginners and Pro's

Post by jasper125 »

I am strugling alot while riding my dirtbike so i thought it might be good to open up a thread were you can aks for tips and help.

I'll start off i struggle alot getting comfortable while standing i always end up hanging on my fingertips on the bars. So i have to grip the bars really tight what causes after a few laps armpump.
Do you guys have any kind of training or body positioning what helps. Braking works great stading up over the braking bumps but when i have to get over rollers or throttle bumps i cannot hold on to the bike.

Is my body positioning good?

I'm not pro but here's my 2 cents:

When standing, stick your ass out, put your torso down, look up front.

Your elbows are too high on that 1st picture too.

And avoid hitting the gas while standing as much as you can, it makes you tired a lot easier than if you're sitting down!

Also, while accelerating grip the bike (with your legs) as tight as you can, to the frame/seat.

Try to let the bike push you, Instead of pulling you. All about balance when standing up

My problem is actually the opposite of yours, braking while standing up. Trying to lean back and push my foot forward and down on the pedal feels way too goofy, and I have no feeling in the pedal at all so I normally just end up locking the rear wheel. Is the only thing you can do for that is just do it more to get used to it?

My problem is usually finding the right neutral position when i sit. I know where to sit but I constantly always seem to be at the back of the bike when I sit. Not really any tip that can fix it, just thought I'd share.

Ever thought of getting a step seat Kevin? Or make your own once you find the position, would help consistently getting into the right place on the bike.

I haven't thought about it actually, and my seat cover doesn't really go with my graphics so it would be a good reason to get a new one. Just might...

Well, instead of spending money on a new cover, you could use an old bar pad and make a temporary bump so you can kinda try it out before spending the money.

Having your bars rolled back or having bars with a bad bend can make you sit far back too.

Might try lowering your brake pedal some.

Another tip for Jasper: try standing on the ball of your foot ( I guess I would describe it as the part right before your foot gets bigger and then you have your toes  ) and with your toes pointing more inward. I read an article in one of the MX magazines about the Ryno factor and have used it ever since. If you can find anything on I would suggest trying it out.

When braking, try and keep for weight in the more neutral-to-rear part of the bike. Keep your elbows up and let the bike do what it wants around you. If you have good suspension it'll soak up most everything.

I think he meant the opposite, it feels weird to push his toes down when hes leaning back (I think?) I know I do, when the rear brake gets a bit spongy and you have to push it down quite a bit before it actually 'grabs' that annoys the sh*t outta me, maybe you have to bleed the rear brake (not sure if thats even the right word for it)..
And the back wheel locking up is normal? I know mine does all the time, but we've only got sandtracks over here so it might be different..
