set the jet ski on fire, by accident

I've heard conversation coming out of animal pens that is more intelligent than what is going on in here.

set the jet ski on fire, by accident

Post by shawn1331 »

So there I was, working on my 1988 JS300 that I just picked up an hour before with my dad. We picked it up cheap and it doesn't run but we knew it wouldn't be anything major. So we cleaned the carb, checked the reeds, mixed some gas and a new battery and tried to get her going. This is when we went bad.

If you've ever owned a stand up jet ski, you'll know that they are pretty compact and hard to work on with the gas tank in side the hull. So we took the gas tank off and cleaned it all out. We decided to put a jerry can in it's place and just put the gas lines inside so it could suck up the gas but the jerry can was a lot smaller and it allowed for more room. We were having a tough time getting it to go, so we were taking out the reserve line and dripping gas directly into the carb while trying to start it. So gas was dripping into the bottom of the hull. Once in awhile when we would hit the start button it would crank for awhile and then backfire. I guess one time it back fired and knocked the spark arrestor and the pipe apart without us noticing. Next thing I know theres a huge bang, sparks, and then a fire in my new jet ski. Luckily we had a fire extinguisher and got to it soon enough so there was absolutely no damage what so ever done to the ski, the gas lines didn't even melt. It was on fire for probably a whole 6 seconds but it felt like a minute or 2 haha.

Needless to say we got it running about a half hour after but it'll need some work done to it :D It scared me for a second, I was like "damn my new jet ski is on fire already" haha. Do you guys have any stories about your toys setting on fire?

And before anyone says anything, my dad is a licensed mechanic and we do know what we're doing but we didn't see the spark arrestor come apart as it's beind the pipe and under the hull, but the jerry can idea and dripping gas was a stupid thing to do. But we also didn't expect it to blow up haha, oh well no harm done and I have a good story to tell!
